Chapter 49
Artemis was beginning to run out of arrows and the Citadel army was still coming strong, she pulled 1 of her last arrows and slid it into place, she pulled the string back and scanned the crowd, she was preparing to fire when she noticed that the soldiers near the back of the crowd were moving away from the tower, she eased her string back into place and pulled a scope from her belt, she peered down the street past the alien army and saw United States soldiers, Robin and Prophet approaching the enemy forces from behind, the U.S soldiers were firing into the throng of Citadel soldiers, while Robin was fending off a couple with a handful of explosive batarangs, Prophet was emitting a dark mist with oily black tendrils reaching out and wrapping themselves around the large aliens.
Artemis dropped the scope to the floor and pulled a Zipline arrow from her quiver, she pulled the arrow back and quickly fired it, the steel tip stuck into a street light and expanded to hold itself in place, Artemis quickly pulled the line taunt and secured the other end inside, she locked a handlebar around the line and took a step back from the edge before diving out the window.
Artemis was carried forward towards the light post but she released the handlebar half way down, she drove her foot into the chest of 1 of the Citadel soldiers, she pushed off his chest and brought her right foot around for a follow up kick to his head, her foot connected and his hand went up to bat her away but she had already let herself fall backwards out of reach, she landed on her hands before springing off onto her feet a yard away, the alien brought a frantic fist in on her left, Artemis span under the attack and caught hold of the large hand as it continued its arc, she pulled back on it hard before kicking out at the wrist, she then danced away as the soldier swung his arms wildly while howling in pain, his left arm swung around towards her and passed inches from her, she jerked back towards his reactionary attack leaving his torso unguarded, which Artemis took advantage of, she swung her arms above her head and with all the force she could muster brought a metal stake into the large alien’s chest cavity, for a moment they both stood there, frozen in the moment, Artemis chest heaving, and then the alien collapsed backwards with a heavy crash.

The 2 Tamaranean princesses fought to keep their footing as they stood a couple feet away from the Gateway, held way from its pull by steel cables attached to harnesses around their waists, they stretched their hands out towards the swirling tear in space, blue and orange flames shot from their palms and got immediately swept up by the Gateway’s pull, the flames swirled into the blackness of the void and it began to slow.
The Vortex slowed but it became clear very quickly that it wasn’t stopping, at first it slowed to a steady rate for almost half a minute but then picked back up and actually increased in speed, eventually moving even faster than it had been before,
“It’s opening back up” Kori shouted, the Gateway’s roar making it almost too loud to understand her,
“It’s not meant to be shut off like this, not after this long, 1 of us is gonna need to try from the other side” Kommand’r shouted back and quickly began fiddling with the straps of her harness,
“What are you doing?” Kori asked, concerned,
“I’m gonna hit it from the other side, as soon as I’m through hit it with everything you’ve got” Kori shook her head,
“No, we’re gonna figure something else out, leave your harness alone” She yelled, Kommand’r had already finished undoing her harness,
“I’m really sorry, goodbye” With that Kommand’r let go of the steel cable, Kori tried to reach out to grab her but her own cable kept her back, Kommand’r was swallowed by the vortex and only a moment later the Gateway closed.
