Chapter 373 - Sweet And Tangy Water

Then Jason is ambushed by a bunch of spiders, because of course he is. Ten dog sized spiders jump out of the foliage and trees. This would be quite the threat for most groups.

For Jason, though? Sure, his venom resistance might not be too up to snuff at the moment, but he has more than enough experience with paralytics and that is what jumping spiders tend to be packing. After all, without webs they need to be able to immobilize their prey pretty quickly. Though the pack hunting thing is a little odd, they are from a danger zone so likely under the command of some greater spider based threat.

To say that Jason isn’t taking the ten spiders too seriously wouldn’t be wrong. Most of this comes from him not sensing much of a threat from the group. Sure, they’re all within the same break as him, but they only have red markings with only a hint of orange markings starting to appear. So while the System might call them orange marked jumping spiders they should be closer to level ten than not, barely past being red marked jumping spiders.

This might not be the end all be all when it comes to judging the danger provided by the spiders. However, it does mean that their venom likely isn’t fully upgraded yet and should still be completely natural in nature. Maybe if the group had a spider with clear orange markings, he would be a little more vigilant against them as that would point towards magic being in the venom. For this, though, Jason is more worried about an extra layer to the ambush rather than the current enemies involved.

So, with a critical eye on the trees around him, Jason begins to dance with the jumping spiders. Though with his first punch, the second reason he isn’t worried about them shows itself. His blast punch is basically the nemesis for anything with an exoskeleton.

Whereas other people would have to put effort into breaking said exoskeleton, Jason ignores it and directly attacks the more vulnerable insides. Sure, he does the same when it comes to creatures without an exoskeleton. There is just one extra little catch that screws over things like spiders. At least at this level, they all still use some form of hydraulic pressure to move. Now consider what happens when suddenly there is a ton more pressure trapped within their exoskeleton.

This is particularly nasty for these spiders because of Jason’s ability to use his blast skill from any part of his body. A spider would try to latch onto his back and bite him, only for a blast of Energy to spasm their legs. From there, it is a simple matter for Jason to take a step back and finish it with a war stomp. Suffice it to say, the spiders did less than stellar.

Jason’s only problem with them is the fact that his attacks messed up their insides. This particular aspect of his burst skill hadn’t really come up until now. After all, it isn’t destroying the claws, teeth, or pelt of his kills. For the spiders, though, it meant out of the ten, he only managed to find one with the venom sacks still intact.

Even that set of venom sacks wasn’t entirely intact. Jason just managed to harvest them before too much had leaked out. This was a bit of a problem as it meant the venom wasn’t exactly going to stay viable for all that long so he was going to have to use it or lose it, with no chance to sell the stuff.

The good news is that Jason does have a use for it. Though first things first, he hightails it out of there. Even with his skill, playing with venom while still in the area of the monsters that just tried to use it on him wasn’t a smart idea. Once a good distance away, though, he settles in for some testing.

First up is of course to try drinking some of the venom. Jason had heard that snake venom tasted almost like sweet tangy water, not that he was going to get a good taste of the spider venom. With the sack punctured, it had gotten a good bit of whatever you call spider blood in it.

As he thinks about this though, Jason can’t help but laugh. Irl, he wouldn’t even consider drinking venom. Sure, unlike poison, venom doesn’t hurt you when consumed. However, all it takes is a single sore in your mouth or ulcer in your stomach and things go downhill from there. Yet here he is, wondering about the merits of spider venom as a drink.

With a laugh, Jason focuses on his body as he takes a sip of the spider venom. In theory, the venom shouldn’t do anything to him at all. The thing is, his body is weird. There is that whole untainted core effect from his cultivation technique, which means his insides aren’t really there. Sure, when he is poisoned or envenomed, the System forces his body to react like normal, but that doesn’t matter here. He isn’t being envenomed after all.

However, he is getting the venom inside of him. In theory, it should be just as valid of a target for his resistance skill as it would be if the spider injected him with it. An interesting idea as it would in theory make gaining resistance to most venoms a lot safer. Sure, it isn’t going to help with any of the higher level options. After all, a venom partly made of magma is going to hurt no matter how you take it, but for the mundane venoms? Maybe only an exquisite venom would get around this and you don’t exactly run into exquisite venom all that often. Such things are basically reserved for truly mythical beings and even then, generally just the young because they tend to gain magical properties as they get older.
