since no one commented on what animal they would like, and no one told me how to get a poll up and running, I just went ahead and wrote this chapter
As the three animals continued circling around me, waiting, waiting for an answer to their not quite unspoken question. meanwhile I was figuring out what the different animals represented. the snake stood for the darkness of caves and warrens, the places under the earth. the bird of the darkness of night, and the freedom of wind. the last one though, I could not discern anything other than solitude emanating from it. It's aura spoke of eons alone, with no one to depend on, no one to be with. If I had learned one thing from my time on earth, it was that loneliness was the ultimate killer. you could go insane from it, and kill yourself. all other emotions:love, greed, rage, madness... all stemmed from the desire to not be alone.
kneeling in front of the creature of my choosing, I stretched out my hand and held it much like one would when one meets a new dog. In that one moment, I saw the entirety of my life, past and what could be stretched out into eternity. Then I understood that if I choose this creature, i would walk a path few others could, one of a traveler who was like erosion, unnoticeable at first, but with unchecked force, could shape worlds. one who couldn't destroy the world, but one who couldn't die. Realizing I knew a song that described something like this, I sat down, and started singing

finishing my song, I looked into the golden eyes of my chosen ¨companion¨ and rejoiced in the fact that I would never be alone again. then the darkness closed in around me and my animal, and all was still.
