Chapter 8 - Regressor (2)

The trip to the main island was silent. It was very awkward and no one wanted to talk about the current status. It was like going home after being 2nd place at a competition. The walk wasn’t very long. It was about a quarter of a mile long. When we set our steps on the main island, the crystal stairs disappeared. What welcomed us was a giant door. The outlook of the kingdom was like a castle. Loyd walked towards the entrance and knocked. There was no response. The sky was still dark and winds were striking us heavily.

“Umm, is it normally like this? It’s kinda getting cold. Can we go in?” Crimson annoyingly asked.

The kingdom was nothing like what the server described it as.

「A warm spring season kingdom where the sun never sets or rises, where only twilight remains. The angels sing with harmony and laugh with joy.」

“It seems you are the leader here.” Soksa spoke to Loyd. “Everything is up to you. Just make your call and we will initiate it.” She was surprisingly friendly to us. There was no sign of hostility and it seemed she was planning to help us out.

“Why are you following us…” Loyd asked with a serious, low tone voice. There was a little bit of anger, suspicion, and helplessness in his voice. He then turned around and walked right in front of Soksa. The tension grew more and more as they were put together. “I’ve seen through past memories. You are never cooperative. The reason why you failed in all the other worlds and the past regression is because of you, not us. You would act careless and recklessly. Always acting by yourself and getting the way. And you repeated that mistake in this regression too.” He didn’t scream. He would just narrate the words one by one, not expressing his anger but showing wrath in the words. “ has always been your enemy. You would betray the archangels and attempt to murder Michael many times. There is no way that you came to just to help us defeat the catastrophe. Soksa remained calm even when Loyd was enraging right in front of him. She acted as if she had more cards to play. “Visiting the last place you would ever want to go means one thing. You ran out of cards to play. You can’t regress any more can you? Why, is the damn old grandpa dead already?”

“Ever since I started this regression, I was always putting my effort into it.” Soksa finally answered. “Yeah, you're right. I can’t regress anymore. I could but I don’t want to. The last time I died and regressed, it took me time that felt like eternity to reshape my soul. In the process, I lost many parts of my memory. My guardian has been asleep for a while now. Probably since my 91st regression.” She walked towards the entrance of the of . She walked passionately and dedicatedly. “I won’t give up. At least not in this world. I always tried my best. Even if it is not the way you imagined.” She set her warm hand on the golden door. As she inserted the mana, the door started to light up.

“What is your goal in this world?..” Loyd asked.

“Gain the 3 Ancient Mythologies and see the last story.” Soksa answered.

When the door was fully lit, it began to open.

“I would really appreciate some help.”

The inside of the castle looked a lot like a cathedral. There was a path leading us to the end of the hall and there were drawings and stained glasses everywhere. While we were walking towards the center of the dome, Loyd took a turn and took a seat on one of the chairs.

“You two go on a walk. Me and Luke will catch up soon. We need to have a talk.” Loyd spoke. Crimson nodded then walked away with Soksa. I carefully took a seat next to Loyd. “I guess I owe you some explanation.” He quietly whispered. “This world is probably different from the one that you used to know.” I was surprised. I took a sudden turn towards him. “Ever since the moment you arrived in this world, I questioned who you were. The reason why I attacked you at first sight is because you looked a lot like someone I knew.” I wanted to say something really badly but I didn’t know what. I was just so surprised and stunned. I was dumbfounded. “I had no faith in you at all. The only reason why I brought you to the catastrophe was because of the quest I received.”

  “Loyd I… I just…” I stuttered my words.

“When I was unconscious and was left to die, you saved me.” Loyd smiled and laughed lightly. “It was then when I realized that it doesn’t matter where you are from. You saved my life and you meant it. Risking your life to save someone else’s who you have never met before.” He was staring at the stained glass that was located on top of the hallway. There were 3. Each of them were red, blue, and green. But the green stained glass which was located on the very right seemed to turn orange over time. “You helped me and Crimson defeat the catastrophes, settle down the revolution, and help us arrive to . But it seems you know little to nothing about this world because I was still too scared to take someone new as my companion.”

“Honestly, I don’t know what I’m doing here either.” I finally spoke. “These few days of my life have been better than the previous 16 years. Everything happened just so sudden and I was lost.” I explained. “At first, the only thing I could think of was becoming friends with someone who I adored. I really didn’t think of what was coming afterwards.” I decided to open up myself. “It’s like I finally have a purpose in my life. Instead of wandering around, I finally found my path without a destination. I’m really happy here, Loyd. I want to stay and become your companion.”

As if he was satisfied with my answer, he sat back and relaxed. “Well, where should I start? The final story? The ancient kingdoms? The constellations? Or that stupid regressor?” He asked. “Soksa is a regressor. The type of regressors that appear in webnovels or fantasy webtoons. And for some reason, I have the ability to download memories from myself of other regressions.” He explained.

“So how many times did she regress?”

  “118 times.”

I was shocked in disbelief. When I thought of regressors, I thought they were people who would go back to the past, relive their life, buy some bitcoins, and die rich. I didn’t think a sole man could do that. I would be mentally torn down if I regressed that much.

“I don’t know why she would regress that much either. Nor do I know why she regresses. She just does it because she wasn’t satisfied with the result of the other worlds. All I know is that when she regressed, the world she used to live in was already destroyed.” Loyd explained.

“So if she regresses, our world would still exist right?” I asked with doubt and fear.

“Umm… Probably. Well she said she can’t regress anymore, so…” He replied with uncertainty. I guess we just have to wish she never fails on what she wants to achieve and doesn’t regress.

I stared at Soksa who was standing about 20 meters away from us. She was looking up at the paintings that were drawn on the dome. It reminded me of the cathedrals in Italy.

“Why, are you interested in her?” Loyd asked wickedly. He was looking at me with that look your friends give you when you start talking to a girl.

“No it’s just… She is an interesting person. I never imagined a girl to be a regressor. The regressor I knew was a tall, muscular, handsome man who has like 3 different girlfriends.”

“Whatever you are reading, you should probably stop and find something else…”

We both laughed loudly. It seems all the awkwardness evaporated. We got to know each other better just from this talk. Not many words were passed down but we were able to understand each other better. The way we spoke, the way we thought, the way we expressed our feelings, and many more.

“Well, I guess we can’t keep them waiting. Let’s get moving.” He spoke. We both stood up and started walking towards where Crimson and Soksa were.

“But how did this catastrophe we are going after take over ? It just doesn’t make sense. Michael, the king of is a mythical constellation. No incarnation or a human being can defeat a mythic constellation.” I asked with curiosity. Loyd drowned in deep thoughts for a little bit. “All the catastrophes so far are beings who once tried to destroy the town. If this pattern continues to follow, the person who we will go against is probably Sleepy.” He replied. I knew who Sleepy was. A sly, coward, a trader who would switch sides every morning. “He was the leader of the districts during the [Deconstructed] war. He probably took over to take revenge on me. After all, I was the representative of at some point…” Sleepy probably returned as a catastrophe after making a deal with the [Outer Gods]. But even if he gained supernatural powers, there is still a limit to his abilities. By fighting against Zoiph and Duk, we have already witnessed what the power of the catastrophe could do but it doesn’t make you strong enough to defeat a constellation. Loyd, the strongest warrior in the town would still struggle against legendary constellations, who are the stars a level under mythical constellations.

“This entire quest is wrong…” Loyd spoke as we walked towards Crimson and Soksa who were standing in front of another giant door that was on the other side of the door we came through. Everything started with a question. Uriel, one of the great archangels, involved in a low level quest was already a mystery. There was absolutely no reasonable explanation on why she would engage in the underground city revolutionary quest. And a mythic constellation losing his fight against a catastrophe is absurd. What the hell is happening in ?

“Okay um so like… Obviously something is wrong. Surprisingly, this door just opened automatically.” Crimson explained. Just like his explanation, the door wasn’t locked. It was already half opened. Loyd approached the door and tried to analyze the sense of mana.

“The base mythology of this door has been damaged. There was a battle here.” Loyd said. The door was cold, colder than the weather outside. I could also feel the lack of mana flowing through the door. This is the final gate towards the kingdom. There is no way the security is negligent.

“This chain can be broken just with a punch. It’s as if someone is trying to stop other people from accessing the area.” Soksa commented. She then applied some mana to her fist and simple handedly broke the chain that was connecting the door. There wasn't much dust on the golden door. This means that the battle happened not so long ago.

“Was this Sleepy’s doing?” Crimson asked.

  “Probably…” Loyd answered.

We entered through the door and was greeted with a structure that looked somewhat like a maze. It also looked a lot like a dungeon. There were 3 different hallways. Each one was located on our right, left, and in front of us.

“Incoming.” Soksa yelled as she pulled out her sword. Soon after, we heard footsteps dashing to us. It was a swarm. Tens, maybe even hundreds of them were there. They were coming from both right and left. “It’s gargoyles.” Loyd prepared to attack. Gargoyles are mythical monsters who were pinned onto entrances of churches. Some of them had wings like dragons and some of them marched like lions.

“Shit… Do we have any ‘Divinity’ type magic?” Crimson asked.

“Who the hell do you think we are, saints?” Soksa angrily replied.

Gargoyle’s main weakness is ‘divinity’, a form of magic that is used by saints and the angels. You can also use ‘energy’, which is a combination of fire and lightning but it isn’t as effective as divinity and it is also hard to create and handle so it isn’t commonly used. Synonym for divinity is light energy which is not really a thing. The gargoyles woke up probably due to the lack of sunlight in the kingdom.

“Soksa… Can you slow the time just for a little bit?” Loyd asked with uncertainty.

“I have some splash potions of turtle master if that helps.” Soksa answered.

“That will do. We just need to make them slower.” Loyd spoke with confidence.

The potion of turtle master is a big gambling. It slows the receiver of the effect greatly but it also doubles their defendability. If Loyd can’t come up with a solution in time, we will be crushed like ice cubes.

Soksa splashed the potion towards the gargoyle. They slowed town noticeably. It was like they were in a slow motion video.

“The effect is going to last a maximum of 5 minutes.”

“Okay so what are we going to do now? Just stand still?”

Loyd stared into the massive crowd of gargoyles. He was looking into each one of them carefully. “They normally don’t act as groups.” Loyd explained. “If they are attacking in a swarm like this, there must be a leader or something.”

“Is there a way of distinguishing them?” Soksa asked. Loyd then pointed at one of the gargoyles standing in the very back of the swarm. He had a long beard and looked more like a goat than a gargoyle.

“That… It’s Belphegor…” Loyd spoke. Belphegor is a demon that represents the sin of sloth. “Wait you have to be fucking kidding me.” Crimson frustrated. “Ugh… I guess that explains how Sleepy was able to take over .” Soksa complained. It seemed everyone was able to inference what Sleepy did, even Crimson. I was the only one that was lost and clueless.

“I can defeat him. I just need to get there.” Loyd held on to his sword, [Requiem] as hard as he could. “Wait wait wait. You are not going through all of these gargoyle’. You will actually die.” Crimson refused to go along with Loyd’s idea. “You can’t die here. At least die fighting the catastrophe king. Send Luke. He is practically useless-...” He was cut off as Soksa slapped his face. “This Crimson is worse than the one from the last one.” She spoke with despair towards Crimson.

“My [Fallen Angel] trait is still in my stat menu. I don’t know how long it will last but… I’ll try my best.” Loyd’s wings and horns started to break out.

“Don’t die. I can not stand another second with these bastards.” Soksa threatened Loyd.

“Ugh… I swear to all the constellations in the sky, you have the main character syndrome. So many sacrifices. What are you, the Demon King of Salvation?” Crimson complained.

[Constellation, “Demon King of Salvation” asks why he was mentioned.]

I didn’t speak to Loyd. We just gave each other a sight and nodded. The gargoyles were beginning to speed up. The effect of slowness started to dim. Loyd soared through the monsters as swiftly as possible. Because the roof was not that high, the distance between the gargoyles and Loyd was adjacent. Probably less than a meter.

“Get ready!” Soksa screamed out loud. She prepared to use ice magic against the gargoyles in order to slow them down and buy time for Loyd to kill Belphegor. Gargoyles were scratching Loyd’s wings as he hovered. And because his [Fallen Angel] trait was disappearing, his wings were being torn down at the same time.

“He won’t make it.” Crimson commented. He was right. At this rate, he wouldn’t make it to the other side in time. We needed a miracle.

Right when Loyd’s wings were broken down and ripped, he dived into the swarm of gargoyles. We’re done. It’s finished.

It was then, when the bright light of divinity started glowing from Loyd. We were all confused. Our eyes were all locked on him. Some gargoyles near him were burning into ashes. Winds splashed behind us when a shape of a human with sacred white wings flew towards Loyd. A black one piece dress with green emerald eyes, and long blonde hair. I knew exactly who that angel was. She then reached and grabbed Loyd and threw him towards Belphegor. As Loyd landed, he rolled on the ground and sliced Belphegor’s head.
