Volume XXII - A Carina Chavel Story - Part 9

Carina Chavel emerged from the underground vault into the chaotic calm of Neo-Tokyo. Rain slicked streets reflected fractured neon lights, and the low hum of mag-rails echoed across the empty avenues. The city was alive, yet indifferent. Every billboard flickered, advertising pleasures she no longer had the patience to indulge in.

Her violet eyes scanned the rooftops. No drones. No patrols. Not yet. But she could feel it—the lingering presence of Nakamura-Kai operatives, their digital signatures suppressed, hiding, waiting for her to make a mistake.

The twin’s voice flowed calmly through her consciousness.

“We need intel. We need leverage. The corporate board will come for us.”

“And we give them what they deserve,” Carina muttered, her tone hard, precise.

Her boots echoed against the wet pavement as she moved through the alleys. She avoided mag-rails and main streets, keeping to shadowed paths. Every step was guided by the twin—every corner, every blind spot, every potential ambush calculated in milliseconds.

By midnight, Carina reached the old Nakashima Tower, a building rumored to be a secret data hub for Nakamura-Kai. Its lower floors were abandoned and overgrown with holographic graffiti, but the upper levels pulsed with quiet energy.

Using her optics, she detected weak signals of data streams flowing through the tower—encrypted, heavily guarded, but traceable. This was it: the information she needed to locate the mastermind behind Project Lotus.

A hidden panel on the roof revealed a retractable ladder. She climbed, her scarab skeleton enhancing her strength and speed, muscles reacting like hydraulics. The neon rain lashed against her coat as she reached the top, standing against the city skyline.

From here, she could see the sprawling metropolis: lights blinking, towers jutting into the clouds, holographic advertisements projecting into the storm. Somewhere in this neon jungle, the architects of her torment were plotting.

“They won’t wait,” the twin warned. “They’ll come for us. And when they do… they’ll bring everything.”

Carina exhaled, flexing her fingers around her auto pistol and shotgun.

“Then we give them a reason to regret it.”

A shadow shifted above her—a corporate hunter dropping from a higher tower, mag-ropes anchoring to the steel. Carina rolled to cover, shotgun raised.

The hunter landed and fired a pulse rifle. Violet energy from Lotus surged through her subdermal armor, absorbing part of the impact. She returned fire, each round calculated by the twin for maximum efficiency. Sparks and rain erupted where bullets struck steel.

Two more hunters rappelled down simultaneously. Carina moved fluidly, ducking and rolling, switching between weapons seamlessly. One operative went down with a single shotgun blast to the chest, another with a precise pistol round to the head.

The rooftop shook with the arrival of a heavy mech—this one larger, reinforced with kinetic shielding and multiple weapon arrays. It fired a barrage of plasma rounds. Carina dove, the twin guiding her through the trajectories. She activated a grenade, calculating its bounce and timing perfectly.

  BOOM.

The mech staggered, systems malfunctioning. Carina surged forward, violet glow enveloping her. Smart-link weapons synchronized as she fired a rapid series of rounds into weak points on the mech’s joints. Sparks, smoke, and hydraulic fluid rained down.

Through the comm-link of a fallen operative, Carina intercepted a message:

“Subject 07 is active. Deploy the Lotus Containment Protocol immediately.”

  The twin whispered urgently:

“They know we’ve taken the key. They’re activating everything.”

Carina’s violet eyes flared. She traced the signal to a skyscraper in the distance, its top floors glowing ominously in neon crimson. Nakamura-Kai’s apex—where the mastermind waited.

“Let’s finish this,” she muttered, climbing toward her next objective.

Rain lashed, winds howled. Neon reflections fractured across the streets below. Carina moved like a shadow across rooftops, twin consciousness syncing every muscle, every thought.

Below, corporate reinforcements poured into the city. Drones, mechs, and hunters flooded the streets and rooftops. But she was ready. Every move predicted, every counterattack pre-planned.

The war for Project Lotus was about to reach its climax.
