CHAPTER 12 – MOVING IN SILENCE

Arel tapped a young member on the shoulder. “We enter from the east side. Nyra, mark the path,” he said, his voice rough but firm.

Nyra nodded, ears twitching at a distant sound. “Something’s off… their patrol shifted since last night,” she whispered. “They’re waiting.”

Kairo raised an eyebrow, eyes scanning every shadow. “If we move too slowly, we’ll be the first to fall,” he said quietly, almost reminding himself. “Think we can handle it?”

Arel’s finger traced the red dots on the improvised map, each marking heavy surveillance. “We have no choice. Split into two units. You and Nyra take the back alley. I’ll lead the others up front.”

Nyra glanced at Kairo. “You covering our flank? Don’t let anything slip.”

He gave a faint smile. “That’s my job.”

They moved, slow but deliberate. The cold wind brushed their faces, carrying the smell of dust and rusted metal. Every corner they passed was a puzzle—burnt-out vehicles, overturned cars, broken planks forming obstacles.

“Is that rope strong enough?” Nyra pointed to the line tied across a crumbled wall.

“Strong, but move slowly. One wrong move and we fall,” Arel replied.

Kairo turned, eyes sweeping the surroundings. “Too quiet. Too quiet.”

Nyra leaned forward, listening with sharp ears. “Footsteps. Two pairs. Coming from the south corridor.”

Arel nodded quickly. “Good. We change path. Follow me, fast but silent.”

They crawled, bodies pressed to walls, eyes constantly seeking moving shadows. Every sound—creaking wood, metal scraping, their own breathing—became a signal.

“This…” Nyra held her breath, pointing at the massive door guarded by mechanical sentries, “that’s where their hybrid command nodes are. No room for mistakes.”

Arel crouched, adjusting the rope that would help them climb. “One step here, one life decided,” he said, restraining the thrum in his chest.

Kairo patted Nyra’s shoulder. “Remember, we’re in this together. Don’t let fear take over.”

Nyra nodded, inhaling deeply. “I’m ready. We cannot fail.”

They reached the corridor’s end, standing in darkness, hearing nothing but their own heartbeats. Arel whispered, “This is it. Go in and do what must be done.”

Once again, they moved—into the shadows, silent, yet every step a battle not yet begun. Their hope, fragile but fierce, traveled with each movement, defying the lurking shadows waiting inside.
