Chapter 15 – Eternal Gratitude

The truth was harsh, but Gabriel had learned to survive alone, until the farm, by sheer luck, during one of his trips down to the village, he had crossed paths with the only good hearted man he had known up to that point. Gabriel was being chased by the villagers and had run as far as he could, but he reached a crossroads. In a panic, not knowing where to flee, he saw a man pass by in a cart. At first, he was frightened, fearing the man would catch him and hand him over to the others, but the opposite happened: the man noticed his desperation and offered help.

He told him to climb onto the cart and hide so the villagers wouldn’t see him, and Gabriel obeyed, curling up under the blanket. When they arrived home, the man invited him into his humble abode. After settling in, the man offered him something to drink.

“Would you like something to drink?”

“I’ll take a glass of water...,” he said, still out of breath from the run.

The man went to fetch water for Gabriel.

As they sat together, they talked about what had happened, but Gabriel omitted who he really was. He feared that if the man found out, he might turn against him or, worse, denounce him and hand him over.

The man, upon hearing Gabriel’s story, felt sorry for him and let him stay the night. He lived with his wife and son, but had an extra room where his guest could stay.

Gabriel realized they were humble people. As soon as he entered the room, he noticed the house was flimsy, made of almost rotten wood that could collapse at any moment. But what bothered him wasn’t that, he was used to sleeping even on the street if necessary. Unfortunately, in his life, he had to adapt to everything. This case was different, though: his heart tightened just knowing that family lived in those conditions... they didn’t deserve this. Despite everything, he was grateful to the man who had saved him... if it weren’t for him, he surely would have been caught this time.

The next day arrived. After a poorly slept night, Gabriel had breakfast with his savior’s family, and then the man took him to the mansion. On the way back, as they talked, the man revealed that he would leave the village due to their increasingly dire financial problems, they barely had food, and in the hope of a better life, they were going to stay with relatives, but they needed money for the boat trip. Since things were financially tough, he had decided to sell the cattle and the house. Moved, Gabriel wanted to help and bought the farm from him. The man accepted immediately; the deal was closed even before reaching the mansion. The payment covered the trip and left enough for a new venture in the city.

And so it was, today, his savior lived well with his family. He opened a business that brought good profits and even started a second store. From time to time, he sent letters to Gabriel, asking how he was and reaffirming his gratitude for buying the farm, because without him, he never would have afforded the boat trip. Little did he know he had saved Gabriel’s life, not only by hiding him, but by giving him the means to subsist and survive. Gabriel thought buying the farm was meager payment, in truth, he could never express everything that man had done for him that day.

He only felt as much gratitude toward the man as the man felt toward him and wished all the best for him and his family.
