“Your turn Connie, Tanner is not back yet,”
“Okay thanks. I will see you soon.”
“Luck.” Connie takes a nervous breath and touches the dungeon pillar, Her and Leaf Hunter disappearing in a purple glow.
Connie and her bond find themselves in a small chapel. Looking out the open door, they see a graveyard. “I hope this does not mean undead. Buddy.”
‘smell bodies.’
“That is what I was afraid of.”
‘No fear. We fight. We kill. No eat.’
“We are most certainly not eating, Hunter.”
The sensation of laughter follows her out of the chapel.
“You been hanging around Jester too much.” Connie stops once out of the chapel. She takes a slow spin around and finds herself in the center of a small graveyard. In the dim, misty evening light, the surrounding the countryside looks to be flat grassland, with everything neatly trimmed and sculpted. “Looks like a park, Hunter. Sorry if I am talking too much boy. I’m nervous.”
Hunter’s head rubs against her thigh while he sends reassurance over their bond.
“Thanks buddy.”
Grave dirt moves as two skeletons with tattered clothing rise and walk stiffly to her and her bond. Connie tries her bolt spells out on the undead. She cast Infernal bolts on the closest skeleton, to no effect. Her target, now close enough, takes a slow, broad swipe at her, that she easily dodges. Connie kicks out at the skeleton’s knee, shattering it and separating its lower leg. She scrambles backward, casting Dark Bolts into the skeleton’s head. To her astonishment, the Dark bolts not only heal her target, it grows bigger by a foot. Panicked Connie casts Divine Judgment. The blazing spear cuts through the misty dim, slamming into the empowered skeleton, shattering it to chunks of bone and dust.
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
“Dark makes them stronger, Light should do lots of damage.” Casting Light Bolts on the next skeleton. Connie sees the skeleton freeze in place when the first bolt hits, when the second bolt slams into the skeleton, bones glow, the third bolt crumples the bone frame. As the bones fall with a clatter, more skeletons dig their way up from the surrounding soil. Large corpse worms fall off some of the bone warriors, crawling to the pair. The two fight in earnest Connie’s light Essences reaping a bone harvest, while Leaf Hunter savages the worms and protects Connie’s back. When no more skeletons appear, Leaf Hunter prowls the small graveyard, triggering the undead to rise. The warg then leads the risen to Connie, where she slams Light Essence into the undead. Once the small cemetery is clear of opponents, Connie loots the remains. “We got grave moss and bone dust, used in Alchemy. Wonder what for? I know you don’t care. Lets move out.”
The warg leads Connie away from the battleground, sniffing the air. A humanoid shape stumbles out of the mist. Connie Identifies the monster as a ‘ZOMBIE SHAMBLER, UNDEAD CREATURE, WEAK AGAINST LIGHT MAGIC.’ “Well that would have been helpful before the last fight. Huh boy?” The warg growls in agreement. Connie casts a Celestial Bolt at the zombie just to see what happens. The bolts damage but not enough to kill the undead creature. She casts Light Bolts, and the slow creature dies. When the next undead makes its appearance, she cast Light Bolts, killing the monster. “I wonder if I can cast an aura like Lilly and the other two do only with Light or Celestial? What do you think boy?” Leaf Hunter's teeth and claws glow with bright light in answer, Connie smiles while she pats him on the head. A few more encounters go by when she gets a notice. “NEW SPEELL LEARNED: AURA; CASTS AN AURA AROUND THE MAGE CONTAINING THE ESSENSES ATTUNED TO THE CASTER. AURA CAN DAMAGE OPPONETS WEAK TO THE ESSENSE USED, DAMAGE CAUSED EVERY SECOND OF EXPOSURE.” Connie nods her head in satisfaction, as she cast her new spell. She and her bond march forward to battle, the glow of light essence surrounding them for ten feet in all directions. The next graveyard, they face slow zombies. The fight goes better with her Aura spell active. Although the effort to maintain her Aura Spell and Cast her Bolt spell takes some getting used to. After gaining a notice for dual casting, her efforts become much easier. Connie and Leaf Hunter’s battles continue in the same vein until.
Out of the misty twilight, a fast shadow flashes by her, sharp agonizing pain erupts from her shoulder. Connie rolls sideways, too late to avoid the monster’s speed. Leaf Hunter's snarls echo from the mist as she hears the sounds of a fight. Connie casts Healing Touch on herself, the wound heals, but she is still losing Hit Points. Looking her Status Sheet over, she finds the fast moving zombie has infected her. When she casts Divine Cleanse, putrid green Essences flows painfully from the skin area she was wounded. Connie rushes to the sounds of the ongoing fight, casting Light Bolts at the creature locked in combat with her bond, killing it.
She cast Divine Cleanse on her warg friend, the same putrid green Essences waft out from the wounds inflected on poor Leaf Hunter. After casting Divine Cleanse twice more, no further Essences flow from the badly wound warg. Connie casts Healing Touch on her friend. When she reaches out to touch the beast’s shoulder, Connie is startled to find Leaf Hunter’s hunched fore shoulder has grown even with her own. “Wow Level Nine! Good job boy, one more Level and we have a permanent bond. Do you want that?”
Leaf hunter licks Connie's face in reply.
“Eww, zombie breath. You did that on purpose, brat.” Connie walks off with the sense of laughter echoing from her bond. Now aware of the faster dungeon creatures. Connie and Leaf Hunter move forward with her Aura spell channeled. At the next cemetery, they find fast moving skeletons. Connie sends her bond companion to the graves and destroys her targets at range. Her Bolt spells burn the fast mover’s Hit Points by the time they enter the boundaries of her Aura spell. The last bits of unlife remaining are ripped away, leaving the undead to fall at her feet. Connie and her bond find graves at the western, southern, and easternmost points.
Leaf Hunter stops and lays down with a whine of distress. With heavy pants, he curls into himself in pain. “CONGRATULATIONS YOUR BOND HAS GAINED THE ATTRIBUTES NEED TO TIER. ARE YOU GOING TO KEEP OR DESTROY YOUR BOND. NOTE IF YOU DISSOLVE YOUR BOND YOU WILL LOSE ALL GAINS TO YOUR NEXT LEVEL, YOU WILL ALSO MAKE AN ENEMY THAT WILL STALK YOUR EVERY FOOT STEP UNTIL DEATH, YOURS OR HIS.”
Connie shakes her head and announces. “Keep of Course.”
“YOUR BOND WILL NOW TIER. PUPPYHOOD IS OVER YOUR COMPANION WILL NEED A NEW NAME. REMEMBER NAMES HAVE POWER…”
Connie drops to her knees beside her friend, petting his head and scratches his ear the way he likes. “It’s okay boy we will get through this. Your doing good.”
As the warg struggles with the mental and physical changes thrust upon him. Connie continues to pet and talk to him, supporting him the only way she can. The red haired beast grows, his long forelegs as tall as Connie. The creature's hind legs are shorter, but much more muscular. His red fur color richer with lighter red-blonde highlights. As the warg’s body grows wider and deeper, his breathing becomes easy. His dark claws gain a metallic sheen as they lighten in color. The only thing that stays the same is the mark from Connie’s hand at first bonding. The ordeal fades, and the Celestial Warg rises to his feet and faces Connie. His powerful, hunched front shoulders are now broader than Connie, and just as tall. His head now is as big as her chest. The spark of intelligence in his eye is now much more prominent. “I would like to call you Delaney. In the old language of my people, it means Dark challenger or Angel from the heavens or Offspring of the challenger. To me, you are all three. It honors your mother. She fought so hard to get to you. You are like an angelic protector for me and you are constantly the first to challenge our foes. What do you think?”
‘Strong warrior name, I will accept. I thank you for honor.’
“You can talk to me now?”
‘Is hard. Word limited?’ The warg gives a sigh of flustration.
“It’s okay it will come with time.” As the two approach the dungeon boss area. They find a Zombie Hulk, along with five skeletal archers and five skeletal warriors. “Well what do you think my friend?” ‘Arrow, knife, big one?’
“Yes the archers first, then the warriors with swords. We save the hulk for last. The Hulk is immune from physical damage so spells only.”
The warg runs off behind the skeletal archers. In position, he crouches and creeps toward the line of archers. Connie watches as he stalks the skeletons. The Archers pivot and raise their bows. Connie slams her Light Bolts into the backs of the archers. The warriors jump into fighting stances, looking around for the foe. Delaney charges the archers as they fall dead from Connie’s spells. The warriors spot the warg’s charge and counter charge the warg. The last archer falls as the warriors reach the kill zone. Connie casts Healing spells on her bond, then shifts back to Light Bolts on the skeletons. The zombie hulk runs at the fight. Connie smashes Light Bolt spells into the huge undead as fast as she can while Delaney scatters the bones of the skeletal warriors. The last skeleton falls, and her bond charges at the zombie hulk. Claws and teeth glow with light aura, tearing into the large zombie’s flesh. The bonded pair combined, rip the undead hit points away faster than the hulking monster can react. The monster falls inert, the two gasping for breath stagger to each other. Connie casting Cleansing spells and Healing on the huge warg as they loot all the bodies.
“Let’s go home.” The two head to the dungeon portal and home.
