Chapter 14: Intent

  Kairos Elementary School, 7:10 A.M.

A catastrophic, messy place it became for classroom 401. The classroom assigned for 4th graders in the Kairos Elementary. Children laughed and ran around, some starting paperball fights against one another while others quietly were playing on their laptops and phones in the quieter corners.

Suddenly, a sharp booming noise cuts through the commotion; the teacher repeatedly smacked a ruler against his minimalistic desk. No single word from him. Just a teacher exhausted from the children’s chaos. Students sat down in their respective seats, putting their gadgets away.

Finally things were in order. The bearded professor gave an enthusiastic salute despite having sleepy eyes.

Mr. Frendel: (clearing his throat) “Good morning class! I sense some of you are sleepy. Don’t worry, I’m also sleepy but I’m happy that God offered us a new day!”

Entire class: “Good morning Mr. Frendel!”

Mr. Frendel: “Well then, today will be learning about the Jégosgalia, origins and functions.”

Some students showed genuine interest by giving high fives, raising hands and celebrating. Others frowned in confusion, hearing about the jégosgalia for their first time.

Mr. Frendel: “To begin with, I’ll explain what has, unfortunately, turned into their greatest use in our current society.”

After repositioning, the teacher opened up his laptop and students waited for his next move in complete silence. The man stood up, turning to face the 4th graders, seemingly holding something behind his back.

Mr. Frendel: “As most of you may know, Jégosgalia were widely used as tools of war in ancient times. An act that is still seen in practice today.”

In the solemn storm, thundering clouds raged where two figures stood. Soaked in blood and rain, it was hard to tell what was really happening. One of them lunged at the other without hesitation performing a move fueled by wrath and desperation.

However their charge was abruptly interrupted by a stone wall which raised from the ground. They were quick enough to react, pressing their hands against the obstacle. Ice emerged from their palms like magnets. Seeping through small arid gaps to end up materializing ice spikes from the other side of the rock.

Mr. Frendel: “Jégosgalia are, esentially, a being’s will. Heavily influenced by emotion and trauma. Some even only surge under specific feelings. The more intense these feelings are, the more powerful the Jégosgalia is.”

The second figure, however, was prepared. Creating gauntlets of cobblestone which broke the icicles quickly as they surged. Unexpectedly, the wall crumbled. The one yielding an ice-type jégosgalia leaped through the dust created from the crumbled wall, grabbing them by their neck. They immediately reacted, returning the same grasp to the attacker, pulling them both until they sent each other rolling down a hill separating amidst the trip.

The two managed to stop rolling. One sliding down a skate of ice and the other bends the soil beneath their feet to imitate such motion. Once arriving at the plain, they suddenly dashed at each other.

The ice-type booster held a frozen polearm to swing at the earth-type booster. The target managed to create a shield of coal in time, absorbing the blow but not without damaging their arm from the recoil. These two continued to clash, pushing each other, countering their abilities, over and over again. And after continuing the onslaught, one of them was about to land a finishing blow, however…

  Amanda: “Professor!”

The young voice cut off the teacher’s explanation. She adjusted her glasses and repeated once again the call.

  Amanda: “Professor, Professor!!”

The teacher sighed but not because he was annoyed. He sighed since every time a student raises their hand, it was simply a request to go to the restroom, predictable.

  Mr. Frendel: “Yes, Amanda?”

Amanda: (adjusting her glasses) “My dad told me he saw a booster turn into a big, big scary monster in the middle of a fight…! Is that really possible?”

She asked almost too enthusiastically for what it seemed like such a grim setting.

His eyes widened. For the first time after years lecturing children, a student had managed to ask an interesting question. They all were silent, waiting for his response. He quickly blinked to regain his composture.

Mr. Frendel: “Yeah, yeah. Indeed it is. We call it a physical jégosgalia. Boosters who wield this jégosgalia are capable of changing their physiology.”

Towering over the figure of wintry was a golem, a beast that at least as tall as an oak tree. Its body was made out of pebbles joined together in a messy display. A gaping hole resting at its stomach to what it seemed to be teeth of diamond resting at its borders. No eyes. Simply a giant creature that once resembled a human. The ice-type combatant trembled in shock and fear but eyes locked onto it.

The ice-type tried an initiative by launching an ice javelin at it, but it was futile. The rocky monster caught the javelin easily, which was early a toothbrush for its size and returned it to the sender at an incredible speed it created a small crater. Though, it pierced through the ice-type’s thigh forcing a shout of agony.

Their mind was fogged by pain and desperation, unable to manifest more power from their Jégosgalia. The golem raised its thick fist, ready to set the final blow. But just as he lowered his fist in motion.

A bell rang. The video paused and the teacher set the remote aside on his desk.

Mr. Frendel: “That concludes our class for today. Any more questions?”

His students shook their heads in a horizontal motion, ‘no’, their body language said.

Mr. Frendel: “Then… you’re all free. Be sure to bring your projects next week.” children stood up, rushing out the door laughing and talking about what to do in recess today, like all the information the teacher gave them had gone right out the window.

The teacher sighs after they all left. Sitting down on his desk and appreciating the photo of his classroom. Some seated, others laughing and side-hugging each other.

Mr. Frendel: (sigh) “Ah, let’s see how they grow up.”
