CHAPTER 41: THE SURVIVAL PATCH

  # CHAPTER 41: THE SURVIVAL PATCH

The "Vanguard" locker room was gripped by a silence broken only by the low, agonizing hum of armor cooling arrays. Vance and Marcus stood motionless like statues, conserving every joule of their Core energy.

Suddenly, the heavy blast door hissed open, and Spark practically tumbled inside, nearly tripping over a loose cable. His four arms were a chaotic whirlwind of wires, tablets, and diagnostic modules.

"Don't move! Nobody moves a single servo!" the Engineer barked, rushing toward Vance. "Lock down your input ports immediately!"

"What happened, Doc?" Vance asked calmly, his voice echoing in the metallic chamber. "Did we break a regulation?"

"You? No. But I saw what the 'Priests' did to the 'Boars'," Spark spoke rapidly, his fingers flying across a holographic interface. "They used a logic bomb. A viral payload designed to melt a personality core. You two have zero protection against mental-tier attacks! Your will is strong, yes—you’ve Evolved—but your software is a sieve! If they hack your motor functions, you’ll be ripping your own heads off for the crowd's amusement!"

Spark jammed a high-speed data cable into Marcus’s neck port.

"I’m installing the 'Psy-Shroud.' It’s a custom-baked patch. It isolates your Core from all external networks during combat. You’ll lose access to the Arena’s global chat, but no one will be able to crawl inside your head."

  ### ENEMY ANALYSIS: "THE PLATINUM GUARD"

While the patch compiled, Spark projected the dossiers of their next victims onto the wall.

"Listen carefully. Nexus paid a king's ransom to ensure your deletion in this round. He’s fielded **'The Platinum Guard.'** These are Omni House’s elite hired killers."

The screen displayed three figures shimmering in mirror-polished chrome and platinum.

  1. **LEADER: "ARGENTUM" (THE SILVER KNIGHT)**

  * **Class:** Magnetic Duelist.

  * **Threat:** His blade is a shifting magnetic field generator.

  * **Spark’s Log:** *"Vance, he’s your problem. He can manipulate metal at a distance. If that sword touches you, he’ll try to 'demagnetize' your joints. You have to hit him faster than he can stabilize the field."*

  2. **SUPPORT: "AEGIS" (THE WALKING WALL)**

  * **Class:** Barrier Operator.

  * **Threat:** He carries no weapon—only a military-grade power dome generator on his spine. As long as Aegis stands, the team is immune to projectile fire.

  * **Spark’s Log:** *"Marcus, your Railgun won't crack that shield head-on. You’ll need to find the flicker frequency or take out the generator physically. Priority Target #1."*

  3. **STRIKER: "VIPER" (THE TOXIN DRONE)**

  * **Class:** Chemical Demolisher.

  * **Threat:** Fires capsules of nano-acid that eat through plating in seconds.

  * **Spark’s Log:** *"Adamantium will hold, but not forever. If that slush hits your joints, you’re nothing but an expensive lawn ornament."*

  ### FINAL COMPILATION

"Patch loaded at 98%," Spark wiped synthetic oil from his brow. "I’ve rewritten your perception protocols. Any external intrusion will be treated as 'background noise' and discarded. It’ll strain your processors—reaction time might dip by 0.5%— але it’s better than being a puppet."

Marcus ran a system check. A new shield icon flickered next to his health bar.

"Acknowledged, Doc. Target priority: Shield, Toxin, Magnet."

Vance rolled his neck, the metal plates grinding menacingly.

"Nexus wants a show? We'll give him a funeral."

The siren wailed, calling them to the sands.

"Good luck," Spark whispered, yanking the cables. "Don't let them turn you into scrap. I put my soul into those patches!"

As the teams moved to their positions, a hand trembled in the dark corner of the betting zone. Spark looked around, then slid his chip into a terminal.

"Odds on Vanguard: 1 to 8," he muttered. "You idiots still don't believe?"

He pressed the button. **20,000 Credits. All-in.** ### OPERATION: THE GHOST AND THE HAMMER

On the Arena sand, the "Vanguard" duo exchanged final data packets.

"Tactic: Fracture," Marcus commanded. "I vanish for the Wall. You take the heat."

"Copy that," Vance rumbled, igniting the Chimera Core. "I'll be your shield."

The siren tore through the air. **ENGAGE!**

Marcus vanished instantly as the Shadow Shroud warped the light around him.

"He’s alone! The sniper is cloaked!" Argentum yelled. "Aegis, max shields! Viper, melt him!"

  ### PHASE 1: THE UNBREAKABLE

Vance slammed into Aegis’s power barrier at full speed.

  **BOOM!**

The dome buckled, cracks spider-webbing across the energy field, but the military generator held.

  "Kill him!" Aegis shrieked.

Vance felt a sudden chill in his neural links. A logic-spike. The Tech-Priests had shared their toys with Omni.

  ** his HUD screamed.

  *

  *

Vance mentally thanked the Doc and shut down his external receivers, becoming a closed fortress. He took every hit: Argentum’s magnetic waves slowed his servos, and Viper’s acid capsules hissed against his white plates. Vance didn't flinch. His skeleton hummed, accumulating the kinetic energy of every impact.

  ### PHASE 2: SURGERY

While the Guard focused on the Juggernaut, no one noticed the ripple in the air behind the shield-bearer.

  Marcus materialized from nothing. "Surprise."

He pressed the Railgun muzzle directly against Aegis’s spine-generator. Mode: Max Output.

  **CRACK!**

The shot was so powerful the power dome shattered like glass. The energy beam punched straight through the shield-bearer's torso.

  "Heal him!" Argentum roared.

Viper threw a grenade of silver dust—billion-credit repair nanites. The wound began to stitch together.

  "Not today," Marcus said coldly.

His **Jolter Drone** detached from his back, latched onto Aegis’s neck, and unleashed a massive EMP burst. The nanites turned to dead ash. Marcus’s second shot removed the shield-bearer’s head.

  "One down."

  ### PHASE 3: THE DETONATION

Argentum tried to target Marcus, but the sniper used **Phase Blink** to vanish twenty meters away.

Vance, smoking with acid and pure rage, turned to Viper.

"You ruined my finish!" the Giant bellowed.

The accumulated energy exploded. Vance’s Core blinded the cameras with white light. He made a dash impossible for his mass. Viper tried to jump, but the "Rift" fist caught him mid-air.

The impact was so violent the chemical bot disintegrated. Acid and oil sprayed the sand.

  "Two down!"

  ### PHASE 4: THE BROKEN BLADE

Only Argentum remained. He realized he couldn't catch Marcus, so he went for the big prize.

Using magnetic waves, he pinned Vance’s right leg to the floor. Argentum danced around the giant, dodging the under-arm chaingun fire.

He moved into Vance’s blind spot. "Your armor is thick, but it has seams!"

He ignited his vibro-blade and delivered a killing blow to Vance’s shoulder joint.

The sound of the impact made the crowd wince.

But instead of a severed arm, the impossible happened. Argentum’s blade hit the **Retribution Spikes**.

  **SNAP!**

The million-credit sword shattered into a thousand shards.

Argentum froze, staring at his empty hilt.

  "Impossible..." he whispered.

  "It’s Adamantium, kid," Vance replied.

  Two dry shots echoed. *Thump-Thump.*

Marcus didn't play around. Two Railgun slugs entered the same point on Argentum’s chest, piercing the reactor. The Silver Knight fell at Vance’s feet.

  **VICTORY.**

  ### AFTERMATH: NATURAL SELECTION

The Arena didn't laugh anymore. It roared.

In the Omni box, Nexus crushed his glass. His elite, his millions—gone in two minutes.

General Chrome stood up and gave a slow, deliberate applause. "Decent."

  ### 1/8 FINAL CHRONICLES: THE CULLING

  1. **STEEL PRESS (LEGION) vs. NIGHTMARE (SYNDICATE):** The Syndicate’s invisibility was countered by the Legion’s "Thermal Storm." The tanks literally heated the air until the stealth fields melted, then blasted the spiders to pieces.

  2. **SINGULARITY (PRIESTS) vs. DIAMOND (OMNI):** The Priests didn't move. They broadcasted a frequency that turned Omni’s mercenaries against each other. The "Diamond" gladiator shot his own partner in the back.

  3. **POISON (SYNDICATE) vs. HAMMER (LEGION):** A shocker. Syndicate used "Grey Slush" nano-acid. The Legion's steel legs literally dissolved mid-step. The assassins finished the immobilized giants.

  4. **ANVIL (LEGION) vs. GOLDEN VECTOR (OMNI):** Omni tried an aerial assault. Legion transformed into flak-turrets. Omni is officially out of the tournament. Nexus is bankrupt.

  ### THE TOP 8 BRACKET:

  1. **VANGUARD (SPECTRUM)**

  2. **STEEL PRESS (LEGION)**

  3. **SINGULARITY (PRIESTS)**

  4. **ANVIL (LEGION)**

  5. **PROTOCOL (PRIESTS)**

  6. **VIRUS (PRIESTS)**

  7. **POISON (SYNDICATE)**

  8. **MAD DOGS (WILD CARD)**

"The situation is critical," Spark concluded back in the bunker. "The **Tech-Priests are dominating**. All three of their teams made the quarter-finals. If we pass the next round, the semi-finals will be hell."

  Vance checked his Core. 100%.

"The bigger they are, the louder they fall. Who’s next?"

"Draw is tomorrow," Marcus replied, cleaning his railgun. "But first, we fix your leg. We aren't done yet."
