Chapter 8 - Down in the dragon hole

The angry face of a dragon.

Diff sits up, his back pressing against the cold stone wall of the pit. He breathes heavily, while staring at the dragon in front of him.

Legs? Don't work, broken. His dominant hand? He can't move that either. His hammer slipping from his fingers.

His eyes shake as he starts to panic. The dragon approaches him. It stands in front of Diff. It lets out a loud roar, the same kind that could make anyone stiffen up. It opens its large mouth. Two rows of teeth stares back at Diff.

A ball of fire appears in the mouth. The ball of fire rapidly starts expanding in size.

That's it. I'm dead. I am going to get burned to ash by a lizard.

  Diff thinks to himself.

Meanwhile on the pathway the three miner looking at the now awake dragon.

"What did you do? You pushed him off!" - One of the miners scream at Fernando.

"You are a monster!" - Another miner screams at Fernando.

Fernando walks up to the three scared miner. His face is still covered by the hood of his uniform. He grabs the throat of the miner who just screamed. And another miner who is standing closer than the third.

"Poor, worthless souls, lowlifes among Dreskaars. May you two learn, that do not raise your voices to others. Especially to me." - Fernando talks. His voice steady and calm.

  Crunch

The sound of bone breaking runs down the cave.

Grip loosens. Two dead bodies hit the floor. Making the total deaths in cave twelve.

The third miner steps backwards with wiggly noodle legs, clutching his pickaxe in his hands. Fernando walks closer to him. He pulls his fist backwards, preparing to strike.

Fist launches. Just as it is about to connect with the miner's chest, someone yanks him back.

The miner lands with a puff. He looks around, still scared. The person standing behind him cracks his knuckles in one swift motion.

  It's Paul!

"Run." - Paul speaks to the miner.

Fernando, and the other Division worker look back at Paul.

"Hell are you doing, you Dreskaar?" - Fernando spits out, putting on a stance, ready to strike again.

"Dreskaar? Well that's new. But who cares about that." - Paul puts on a stance too. "The book filled with laws and shit, section Working with another Division. Paragraph I can't remember the number. States: When a Division worker attacks another Division worker, the attacker can be treated as a threat."

"Don't care." - Fernando answers shortly.

Paul steps forward, swinging his arm sideways in a hook. His fist connects with Fernando's jaw, sending him to the floor. The other worker steps between them, punching Paul. But he manages to block the blow.

Fernando jumps to his feet, blood dripping down from his face. He stares at Paul, his red eyes flashing with anger. Then he looks at his teammate, his coworker.

"Why did you interfere?" - Fernando asks.

"Boss called you. Boss wants to see you." - His coworker answers.

"Fine." - Fernando answers. He jumps up into the air. But instead of landing on the ground, his body transforms. Where he was a bat took his place. The bat flies out of the hole that Yunyan made.

  Speaking of her

She stands on the edge of the pathway, she looks at the dragon opening it's mouth, the ball of fire already growing.

She pulls out her sword from it case. Purple handle with a yellow arm guard. The blade is slightly curved and sharp. But slowly, the blade starts to glow.

Glow in purple, the color of a lightning.

"Erica, shoot the dragon. Aim at wings. Vaska, control it's fire." - Yunyan orders, swinging her sword in a semicircle. The blade is now fully glowing in purple.

"Redemption" - Yunyan murmurs quietly. Named attacks are smooth and cool. But can be embarrassing at times.

A step forward. Falling torwasd the bottom of the pit. A streak of purple lightning.

Yunyan is at the eye of the beast. Sword deeply pierced into the middle.

  "Bull's-eye"

The dragon throws it's head back. It lets out a loud cry, breathing fire everywhere.

Or it would be, but Vaska controls the flames. Up away through the hole in the roof. Vaska is standing at the edge of the pathway, circling her hands in a funny way, trying to control the fire.

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

The dragon flutter it's wings open. But a rain of blue energy like bullets shedder them. Erica spins her wrench in hand, already charging it up for another rain of energy.

The dragon stumbles to its side.

Sword out. A streak of lightning. Yunyan is at the two unfortunate miners, suddenly grabbing their shoulders. Her sword is pierced into the ground, now covered in blood.

No sound. Suddenly Yunyan with the two miner are on the pathway. "Clara. Treat them." - Quick order.

Suddenly she is at her sword in the pit.

The dragon did not wait for Yunyan's return. It stood back to it feet.

The dragon is missing an eye and unable to fly, glaring at Diff.

Oh poor Diff, this is not his day. He is trembling and panicking. He only fought three monsters, and two whopped his ass. His win rate is terrible.

He grabs his hammer with his left hand, the only limb he can use at the moment. He throws it at the dragon. It flies perfect at the dragon. Hits between the eyes.

If he would been anybody else, would this attack mean something?

He is Diff, your average guy.

He doesn't have cool weapons like Erica.

He can't use magic like Yunyan.

He can't even be as funny as Johnny.

The hammer cracks before falling down into the pile of treasures beneath the dragon.

That's it. He lost his weapon. In League he can surrender the match and go into the next one.

But for some reason his heart is still pumping, still in combat mode rather than acceptance mode.

Crystals on the wall of the pit. All different shapes, sizes, colors. A great mind would go on a rampage of how this represent society and identity.

But he is Diff, still your average guy.

He grabs a handful of crystal and Yeezys it at the face of the dragon. Red crystals, which happen to blow up when shattered.

The explosion in the dragon face. The dragon did not took it happily.

Another handful of crystals. These ones happens to be blue.

Diff misses and hits the horn of the dragon. It just bounces off and adds to the dragon collection.

Once more. He grabs a handful of crystals. Black crystals? Fuck it. He thinks as he squeezes them, wanting to throw them too.

  Boom

The crystals explode in his hand. Four of five fingers fly everywhere. Blood everywhere. His clothes, the ground. He lets out another, far from manly scream.

Diff couldn't notice in his panic that the dragon raised it's claws. He strikes in a clean motion.

A black mist sorrounds Diff, protecting him from the claws. Then, the entire dragon leg falls off.

Yunyan stands between the Dragon and the mist covered Diff. Her sword is glowing in purple. She raises the sword. She once promised herself. That she won't ever loose another friend ever again.

A streak of purple lightning as she disappears again.

She is at the right behind leg of the dragon.

Another clean cut. The dragon is on its side again.

It breathes out fire, but the fire is fastly taken over by Vaska and guided out through the hole in the roof.

  A streak of lightning.

Yunyan is at the neck of the dragon. She raises her sword and strikes.

A sudden quietness took over the bottom of the pit. No sound from the dragon. Yunyan's sword slowly stops glowing. She rushes to Diff. Squats down in front of the mist covered Diff.

She places a hand on the mist and slowly pulls out the now unconscious Diff. The mist evaporates like it never existed.

The quietness takes over the entire cave. The pit is quiet. The pathway is quiet. Or it would be if Paul stopped punching a very clearly unconscious worker, who helped Fernando. Yunyan slowly puts down Diff and raises to her feet before loudly speaking.

"The fight against a dragon, ended with victory." - She declares loudly.

An hour or two later Diff wakes up. He is in a white tent, laying on a thin sheet. He sits up slowly to look around.

Several other people are also laying there. Those who got injured and needed treatment. He slowly stands up and walks out of the tent.

The sun is painting the sky in orange. The time is clearly afternoon. Birds are not chirping anymore. Just the quiet occasional sound of the trees when a gust of wind shakes them.

Outside, the other Division workers and the remaining miners are where they were. But now the casket that Diff gave to them is empty.

In the right side of the tent Johnny, Paul and Erica sits in silence. Resting their backs on the wall of the tent. Staring straight ahead. Diff looks to the left and sees Clara, next to her Vaska. Resting their backs to the wall of the tent. Diff sits down next to Clara. She looks at him and goes.

"Feeling better?" - She asks quietly.

"I do. But what is going on here? And I can't seem to find Yunyan." - He answers, also quietly.

"Yunyan is in the cave, carrying out those who I couldn't..." - She starts.

"You knew this could happen when you joined." - He interrupts.

Diff glances to the other side. A pile of bodies, covered in a sheet. Just placed on the ground. Then Yunyan walks out of the cave. Carrying a body that is already covered with a sheet. She walks to the pile and puts it down gently.

Then she walks to the few who was already there.

"I'm sorry." - She says quietly.

One of the miners stands up. Without thinking he punches Yunyan in the face. Diff instantly starts to sit up.

  "Sit." - Vaska speaks.

She is cleaning Yunyan's sword at the moment with a red cloth. Diff slowly sits back down.

"Your job was to save the others!" - The miner starts to yell at Yunyan. Who is just quietly standing there, taking the yelling. The miner keeps yelling, punching. But his movements slowly slows down. He starts to cry right in front of Yunyan.

Once he calmed down he sits back down. Yunyan turns and walks to the tent.

"Site is cleared. Commission completed. Payment will be happening in the next couple of days. I talked with the other Division. We all have fifty minutes to take whatever we want from the dragon's nest." - She speaks.

"I treat Yunyan and we will be joining soon" - Clara says, standing up and walking into the tent with Yunyan.

The others stand up and make their way into the mine again. Down into the dragon's pit to look around in the treasures.

First one to take something was Erica. She broke off a bunch of crystals to experiment on them on what they can do. Next one was Vaska. She took a fancy looking lighter and a beautiful red orb. The last, just because it was red.

At this time Yunyan and Clara joined the search too. As Yunyan walked around the dragon's body she found a black cape with a lightning strike image on the back. Clara instantly spot a green staff with a blue orb at the top.

"Mage surgeon?" - Yunyan asks with a smile on her face.

"Why? Is a cape that better?" - Clara ansers with another question.

"This is a cape. Most cool superheroes and even cool villains have one." - Yunyan answers, trying on the cape. Smiling when she realized it's in good size.

The sound of someone falling got everyone attention. Johnny is on his back, holding a bloody sword. The same sword someone got pierced by when falling right on it.

"Is Yunyan getting competition in coolest weapon category?" - Vaska asks while smirking.

"Shut it." - Yunyan smiles while speaking.

Paul grabs a book. "A name I can't read Chronicles. Something nice to read" - He shruggs, taking the book.

Diff also took a book. A book with a black cover with a red pentagram on it. But Diff didn't noticed the pentagram, because he looked at the other side of the book.

Once everyone took something the Division got in the car. The same old mass produced car. The fact that it's still working must be a miracle. Everyone took a seat. The same seat where they sat on the way here.

Diff looks at Clara and instantly remembers what happened on the way here. Clara sensing his gaze turned to Diff, holding her headphone in hand.

  "Yes?" - She asks.

"Clara, the thing that happened on the way here." - Diff starts.

"Want it again?" - She interrupts him, placing a hand on her lap.

Diff just blinks twice in response.

  "Huh?" - He ask.

Clara grabs Diff by his curly hair. "Stay quiet." - She orders before letting Diff rest his head on her lap. Even though Diff just wanted to apologize.

The rest of the way back was quiet. And it was already late when the division arrived back.
