Chapter 3 – The First Step Forward

The first rays of morning filtered through the forest canopy as Sayaka stirred, her ears twitching. She gnced down at Izan, still curled on her back, the dragon toy tucked against his chest. His small body rose and fell with slow, uneven breaths, the remnants of st night's tears lingering in the puffiness around his eyes.

Carefully, she lifted him, keeping him secure, and slung him gently onto her back. He barely stirred, eyes half-closed, muffled whimpers escaping as he slowly became aware of the world around him.

The forest was alive with morning light. Sun glinted off the crystal-clear river they passed, ripples catching the sun like dancing shards of gss. Birds called to one another, the scent of pine and wildflowers carried on a gentle breeze. Izan's small hands clutched her fur, eyes wandering to the flowing water, tears escaping quietly—softer this time, less raw, more reflective than yesterday.

Sayaka's tails swished gently behind her as she walked, keeping him safe and comfortable. Hours passed in serene silence, the quiet rhythm of their movement mingling with the forest's calm.

Finally, as the sun reached its peak in the afternoon, Izan's eyes fluttered open more fully. He lifted his head slightly, looking at Sayaka with a mixture of determination and hope. "Sayaka… can you train me now?" he asked softly, voice steady despite the faint redness around his eyes.

Sayaka smiled gently, shaking her head. "Not just yet, little one. You need time to grow first. At your current state, pushing into training could do more harm than good. You're still too young to handle it properly."

Izan's small shoulders stiffened. "I don't care! I want to get strong! I want to help… people who were in the same situation as me… or worse… and Mother too!" His voice quivered, but his resolve was clear.

Sayaka's eyes softened. A proud, gentle smile spread across her face. She nodded slowly, brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead. "Alright… I can see your heart is set on it. Then we'll start preparing you, little one."

She shifted slightly, settling him more securely on her back. "First, you need to understand what training truly means, and what it will ask of you. We'll go step by step, building strength, skill, and awareness… patience is as important as power."

Izan's grip on her fur tightened, eyes shining with determination as he listened. The forest stretched before them, a silent witness to the beginning of his path.

…silent witness to the beginning of his journey.

Sayaka carefully lowered Izan to a soft patch of moss in a small clearing. "Alright," she said, shifting into her human form so he could watch more clearly. The tips of her fox ears twitched, and her tails swayed lightly behind her. "We start simple. Today, we focus on arms, shoulders, and bance. Nothing too harsh—just enough to awaken your muscles."

Izan nodded eagerly, small fists clenched. "I'm ready!"

"Good," Sayaka said, kneeling herself on the moss. "First, kneeling push-ups. Watch me."

She lowered herself, arms straight, back firm, and pushed down smoothly. "Five slow ones. Feel the movement in your arms and chest, not just your shoulders."

Izan copied her clumsily, wobbling slightly. "Like this?"

"Exactly," Sayaka encouraged. "Slow and steady. Don't rush. Strength grows in patience."

After the push-ups, they moved to crawling push-ups, hands and knees moving in coordination. "Think of it as crawling forward, little one. Small movements, steady." Izan's tiny arms trembled by the third crawl, but he pressed on.

Next came bodyweight squats, and Sayaka demonstrated first, bending her knees carefully. "See? Keep your back straight. Feel your legs and core working together. Don't let your knees wobble." Izan mirrored her best he could, swaying slightly, but smiled proudly each time he completed a squat.

"Now… bear crawls," Sayaka said, lowering onto all fours. "This helps with coordination, strength, and stamina. Move like a little bear, slowly but controlled." Izan followed, giggling as his hands and feet scraped the moss.

"Excellent," Sayaka praised, watching him wobble slightly. "Bance practice next. Stand on one foot—ten seconds each side. Focus on the ground, your body, your breathing. This is your foundation."

After a few tries, Izan stumbled, plopping down onto the moss with a small groan. "My arms… my shoulders… they feel funny."

Sayaka chuckled, reaching out to straighten his little posture. "That's not just funny, little one. That's your body telling you it's working. Feeling sore is good—it means growth."

They paused for a few minutes, letting Izan catch his breath. He leaned against her side, small hands still gripping her fur. "I… I feel strong already, I think."

"Strong enough to keep trying," Sayaka said with a soft smile. "That's what matters. Tomorrow, we'll do your legs and some of the agility exercises." She flicked her ears zily and added, "For now… we've earned a hot spring bath. After all that, your muscles deserve it."

Izan's eyes lit up. "A hot spring? Really?!"

"Really," she said, standing gracefully. "Let's eat first, then we head up the mountain."

The small pair fished by the river, cleaned their catch, and roasted the fish over a fire. By the time they finished, Izan's little arms were trembling and sore, muscles aching from their morning's work.

Sayaka chuckled softly, observing him. "See? That's the reward for effort. Now… up the mountain, little one. I'll carry you."

Izan climbed onto her back once more, holding on tightly as she sprinted up the mountain with effortless grace. The warm spring awaited, steam curling into the cooling evening air.

Steam rose gently from the hot spring, curling into the evening air as Sayaka settled onto a smooth stone at its edge. Izan cmbered carefully into the warm water, shivering slightly before the heat seeped into his tired muscles. His small arms rubbed his sore shoulders, and a quiet "ahh…" escaped him.

"Feels… different than a regur bath," he murmured, eyes wide as he stretched slightly, the ache from training fading into warmth.

Sayaka smiled, tails swishing zily behind her. "It is. Hot springs are full of natural minerals. They help your muscles recover, soothe aches, and strengthen the body. That soreness you felt from training? This will ease it."

Izan dipped his hands into the water, spshing lightly. "It… it feels so nice! I didn't know baths could be… this good."

"They're even better when you've worked hard," Sayaka said, her amber eyes glinting in the fading sunlight. "And look around…" She gestured to the view surrounding them. Mountains stretched endlessly, rivers winding like silver threads, the sunset painting the sky in golds and purples. "This is one of the highest peaks in the area. You can see far and wide. Pces like this are all over the world, some even more breathtaking."

Izan’s eyes sparkled, a single happy tear sliding down his cheek as he gazed out at the mountains. “Could… we travel all over the world together?” he whispered, thinking of Mother, who had never been able to see it herself. “Since she couldn’t… maybe I can, with you, Sayaka.”

Sayaka’s amber eyes glistened slightly, a soft tear escaping as she reached out to tickle him lightly. He giggled, spshing the water with his hands. “We can go wherever you want, little one,” she said, her voice gentle, touched with emotion. “But first… let’s finish enjoying tonight.”

The two rexed in silence, letting the warmth of the spring and the beauty around them soothe their bodies and minds. Sayaka carefully rummaged through his bag and pulled out a soft rag. Using the warm water from the hot spring, she gently helped him wash, making sure he was clean. His little muscles, once tense from effort, now sank into rexation, eased by both the heat and her careful hands.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Izan leaned against her side, small and exhausted. "I… I feel so… good," he murmured.

"That's your body thanking you for working hard," Sayaka said softly.

She helped Izan out of the hot spring, the cool mountain air brushing against his warm skin. With gentle, practiced movements, she dried him carefully with his towel and the rag she had used, folding them neatly afterward. Then she helped him back into his clothes, making sure he was warm and comfortable. His steps were slow, legs heavy and sore, eyes already drooping.

"Now… let's get some rest," she murmured.

Sayaka shifted smoothly back into her kitsune form, her white fur catching the fading light, crimson markings tracing along her body and tails. Izan climbed onto her back without a word, arms wrapping loosely around her neck, his head resting between her shoulders. The moment he settled in, his breathing began to slow.

"Will… we do more training tomorrow?" he asked sleepily, voice barely a whisper.

"Yes," she replied gently as she began her descent down the mountain. "Leg day tomorrow… and more Kitsune training too. But for now… rest."

She moved swiftly yet silently down the winding mountain paths, paws sure and light against stone and soil. By the time she reached the forest below, Izan was fast asleep, his small body rexed against her back, the dragon toy pressed safely between them. A tiny tear escaped from the corner of his eye, but a soft smile lingered on his lips even in slumber.

Sayaka slowed her pace, the trees opening slightly around her.

Only then did she lift her gaze.

The sky above was vast and clear, stars scattered like silver embers across the darkness. In many cultures, such stars were believed to be signs of good fortune—symbols of guidance and hope for those walking long, uncertain paths. Sayaka's amber eyes reflected their glow as she watched them in quiet thought.

  "…A good sign," she murmured.

She continued onward, eventually curling up beneath the shelter of tall trees. Her white-and-red tails wrapped protectively around Izan as he slept soundly against her, his breathing calm and steady.

The forest fell silent once more.

And beneath the watching stars, guardian and child rested—ready for the next day.
