Chapter VI: The First Trial
The first examination began with silence.
Not the quiet kind that comes from peace.
The heavy kind that forms when hundreds of people hold their breath at the same time.
Kael stood among the gathered candidates on the wide stone field of Arcanis Academy's testing grounds. The space was enormous and easily the size of several city plazas combined and yet it still felt crowded with the sheer number of applicants.
Hundreds had come.
Only a fraction would remain.
At the far end of the field, several academy officials stood beside tall crystalline pillars that hummed faintly with circulating mana. Their robes bore the silver crest of Arcanis Academy, marking them as senior instructors and examiners.
The man who had spoken earlier stepped forward again.
His voice carried easily across the entire field.
"The first trial will measure your control."
A murmur rippled through the crowd.
Some students relaxed.
Others stiffened.
Control tests were notorious for exposing weaknesses.
"You will be divided into groups of ten," the examiner continued. "Each group will enter a resonance field generated by the academy pylons."
He gestured toward the tall crystal structures surrounding the arena.
"The field amplifies instability in mana channels."
That caused a few nervous whispers.
"Those who cannot maintain control under pressure will be eliminated."
Kael folded his arms lightly as he listened.
Efficient design, he thought.
Not a test of raw power.
A test of stability.
Which meant candidates who relied too heavily on brute force would struggle.
Good.
That would thin the competition early.
Names began echoing across the testing grounds as instructors called the first groups forward.
Candidates stepped into circular platforms marked by faint glowing lines on the stone floor.
When ten students stood within a circle, an instructor activated the surrounding pylons.

Mana surged.
The air shimmered visibly as the resonance field activated.
Then the real test began.
Some candidates held their composure easily.
Others reacted poorly.
One boy attempted to channel fire magic immediately, only for the amplified mana turbulence to spiral out of control. A burst of sparks forced the instructors to dispel the spell before it injured someone.
He was escorted away moments later.
Another girl lost control of her levitation spell and accidentally launched herself three meters into the air before dropping awkwardly onto the platform.
She was also dismissed.
Kael observed carefully.
Patterns were already forming.
The resonance field didn't simply test power.
It tested balance.
Mana had to flow smoothly through the body’s internal channels. Too much force caused feedback. Too little control caused collapse.
The examiners watched everything.
Eventually a voice called across the field.
"Next group."
A pause.
Then,
"Kael Viremont."
Several heads turned immediately.
The Viremont name carried weight in this city.
Kael stepped forward calmly.
Nine other candidates joined him inside the circular platform.
Among them was the fire-user from earlier.
Alric Thorn.
Alric noticed him immediately.
"So you're the noble everyone was whispering about," Alric said with a faint smirk.
Kael regarded him politely.
"And you are the man who sets things on fire before breakfast."
A few nearby candidates snorted.
Alric frowned slightly but said nothing further.
An instructor raised a hand.
"Begin."
The pylons activated.
Mana pressure flooded the platform instantly.
The sensation felt like standing inside a rushing river of invisible energy.
Several candidates gasped.
One dropped to a knee immediately.
Kael closed his eyes briefly.
Then,
The system flickered in his vision.
Environmental Mana Detected
Resonance Field Active
Ruin Sense: Passive Analysis Enabled
Interesting.
Kael allowed the ability to activate.
The world changed slightly.
Instead of simply feeling the chaotic mana currents, Kael could now perceive their structure, subtle patterns moving through the resonance field like flowing currents within an ocean.
He adjusted his breathing.
Then gently aligned his own mana with those currents.
The pressure lessened instantly.
Not because the field weakened.
But because Kael had stopped resisting it.
Across the platform several other candidates struggled.
One attempted to brute-force their mana flow.
The result was immediate backlash.
They collapsed seconds later.
Alric clenched his teeth as the pressure increased.
Sweat formed on his forehead as he fought to stabilize his mana channels.
Yet Kael remained perfectly still.
Which did not go unnoticed.
One of the examiners watching from the edge of the arena frowned slightly.
"Candidate number six," he murmured.
Another instructor glanced over.
"What about him?"
"Look closely."
Kael stood relaxed.
Breathing steady.
Completely unaffected by the intensifying mana turbulence.
The examiner narrowed his eyes.
"That's unusual."
Back on the platform the pressure increased again.
Only three candidates remained standing.
Kael.
Alric.
And a quiet girl who had yet to speak since entering the circle.
Finally the instructor raised his hand.
"Enough."
The resonance field shut down instantly.
The pressure vanished.
Several candidates collapsed in relief.
"You three pass the first trial."
Alric straightened immediately, trying to hide his earlier struggle.
His eyes flicked briefly toward Kael.
Suspicion forming.
Kael simply nodded politely.
As they stepped off the platform, the system flickered again.
Ruin Node Proximity Increasing
Unknown Structure Detected Beneath Academy Grounds
Synchronization Opportunity: Pending
Kael’s steps slowed slightly.
Beneath the academy?
That should not be possible.
Arcanis Academy had been built centuries ago.
If a ruin node existed beneath it…
Then either the academy had been built on top of ancient ruins,
Or someone already knew it was there.
Across the arena, the observing examiner continued watching Kael carefully.
He turned slightly toward another instructor.
"Keep an eye on that one."
"Why?"
The examiner’s gaze remained fixed on Kael.
"Because everyone else was fighting the resonance field."
He paused.
"But he was listening to it."
And far below the academy's foundations, buried beneath layers of ancient stone…
Something stirred in the dark.
