Chapter 49: A Cunning Strategy

  Tama

"You can't be serious, Saki!" Tera said, her eyes twitching. Then she paused and looked over at me. I frowned at her and she continued, "I meant to say, Dearest Royal Advisor Saki, might I suggest we try a different tactic than attacking an undead army by ourselves?!"

Saki smirked at the shift in tone but waved her away. "It's fine, Tera. I get it. It sounds crazy, but we won't be fighting them directly, and if we pull this off, we can knock out a large number of undead before we even reach Drestor."

Tera frowned. She opened her mouth to speak. Then she looked at me and seemingly decided to take a different approach. Quietly she said, "As you wish, mistress." Surprisingly, her tone held no animosity, only submission.

Saki looked at me, her eyes searching for something on my face. I looked back at her, puzzled. "Nya! What's wrong, Saki?"

She smiled suddenly and shook her head. "Nothing, Tama. I just..." She paused for a moment before the smile faded and she looked at me with round eyes. "Do... do you trust me?"

I looked at her even more perplexed. "Of course, Tama trusts you with her life!" I said, making sure to stand up straight and give her a thumbs up.

Saki looked at me again for another moment, then nodded. "Then I need you to do something really stupid for me." She looked tense but determined.

I simply nodded. "If Saki came up with it, it can't be stupid!" I said simply as I rolled on the balls of my feet.

Tera looked really bad, like she wanted to say something. Instead, she stayed silent and looked away. Pain on her face was clear as day. She clearly didn't trust Saki like I did. She would soon thoughSaki was the smartest person I knew, after all.

Saki began directing us to gather items. Obviously, I found them easily enough and brought them back to her. Saki explained to David he needed to build that shooty thing, but smaller that could fit me in it.

The idea of flying sounded so fun! David was excited as well and began attempting to create the shooty thing. It took him four tries and two trees. But eventually we had a shooty thing!

Saki loaded me into it after aiming at a weirdly specific spot.

"Okay, Tama, listen very carefully. We are launching you directly into the center of the undead army. Every army has a general they put off an aura. I need you to find and kill those captains. Doing so will cause the surrounding undead to go rampant, attacking each other and other parts of the army."

"Nya! Tama finds the captain's things and kills them!" I said with glee and excitement.

"No, Tama! Listen!" she insisted. "The captain will be marked on your title thing as 'captain' in their title. I will also attempt to mark them. I don't know if I can, but I will try. If you see any markers, make your way to them. When enough are dead; five minutes at most, Tamayou need to get out of there and make your way directly to Drestor! Kill any stragglers that follow you and blink far. We will meet you there. Understand?"

"But Saki, what if they attack you?" I asked fearfully, but she waved me off.

"Don't worry, Tama. I am going to set up an illusion that David will carry to make us invisible, and we'll make our way around. If this succeeds, we could kill thousands in one go," Saki said in a placating tone. She was lying, and it made me worry.

"Nya, don't lie to Tama!" I said angrily. My tail snapped at the air as my ears flattened.

Saki smiled at me and said, "Don't worry, we will be fine. I promise." Her ears drooped slightly and she looked sad but determined.

She wasn't lying that time, but I was already scared now. I didn't want Saki to die! I went to climb out of the shooty thing, but Saki nodded to David and he cut the rope.

I went flying into the air. I wanted to blink back, but it was almost as fast as me normally, and I only got to look back once before I was suddenly flying above the army of undead.

They noticed me instantly. Skeleton thingies fired arrows at me. I used my wind to push the arrows to the sides. There were a lot of arrows and they made the sky black with them. But I was quicker. I used my wind to push all the arrows out of my way before blinking directly downwards.

I landed in the center of a bunch of smelly zombies. I pulled Serenity and spun. The zombies fell around me like crazy, even faster than the goblins had. They ran at me with no plan or defensive posture, and I cut through them like my water.

Suddenly, a red marker appeared in my vision. Above the marker it said "captain here" in bold letters. I nodded and began slicing my way through the enemy. There were so many, but they all died so easily.

Eventually I reached the marker. During that time, four more markers appeared. I realized I wasn't going to have to start blinking around these guys to get to the captains faster. I only had four more minutes after all... or something like that. I lost count.

I found the captain guyhe was just a bigger zombie. I cut him into small pieces with Serenity. The reaction of the zombies around was instant. They went insane and started attacking each other, not just me. I shrugged and did a water slash, cutting a swath of them in the direction of the next captain, but it was too far away.

Instead, I jumped into the air above the zombies' and skeletons' heads, then blinked in the direction instantly twice. I appeared right above the second captain. This one was a skeleton. I smirked as I landed in front of it. It had a bow and raised it to hit me.

Instead of cutting the skeleton, I grinned and back-flipped over a zombie coming up behind me. As I did, I used my feet to launch myself back further and launch the zombie into the skeleton captain.

Then I blinked behind the skeleton as it searched for me. I grabbed it by its rib cage and jumped, then blinked twice. Once I was over three hundred feet in the air, and the black arrows came at me again.

I twirled and launched the skeleton captain back towards the ground. I blocked the arrows again and watched as the skeleton captain shattered from my throw.

The zombies and skeletons around the now-destroyed captain went crazy and started attacking each other like before. I smiled and while falling, located the next captain and blinked towards them.

This one was another big zombie. I cut its head off as I landed next to it, grabbing the head at the same time and throwing it full force into the throng of zombies. But the zombies didn't go crazy. Instead, the now-headless captain lunged at me.

I easily dodged, killing a dozen more zombies as I did so before slicing and dicing again. Turns out removing the head does not work on zombies.

Just in case, I tried on another zombie by cutting just its head off. It continued to attack another zombie, and I nodded sagely. Then I left the headless zombie and jumped into the air again.

There were two things left. One of them read "This guy looks dangerous, Tama. Be careful." I frowned at the weird label. Why would a label care about me?

Either way, I went for that one. It sounded like fun. This undead was another skeleton guy, but he looked different. He was floating in the air and had glowing blue eyes. When he caught sight of me, he immediately fired a bolt of ice at me. I easily dodged and got in close. The area around this captain was coldlike, super cold. I grabbed him, but he grabbed my arm too.

I paused, not expecting that. Then I felt a strong chill and sharp pain go down my arm. I jerked away and the creature let go as well. It raised a hand and fired another ice bolt. I dodged again and growled at the stupid creature.

My arm where it had grabbed me was now black and painful. I narrowed my eyes and summoned my water veil. Then I did a long twist while using my water slice. Everything around me for at least thirty feet was cut into pieces.

Except that thing. Oh sure, it had cuts all over it and it was most certainly heavily hurt, but unlike the other undead, my water had not fully finished it. Not wanting to risk it, I pushed forward and sliced manually multiple times, making sure it stayed down. When the blue light left its eyes, the figure fell apart and crumbled to the ground.

I sighed in relief as I paused to look at my arm. The black was spreading. That probably wasn't good. I pushed some healing water into it and it reversed, only to come back slowly. My eyes widened and I realized I needed to hurry. There was only one more left.
