Chapter 1

  Chapter 1

  New Gland High School

The halls buzzed with distant chatter as students moved between classes.

Kiox walked through the corridor, glancing around with mild confusion.

  Where is my class?

Before he could check again, a group stepped into his path.

“Yo,” one of them said, smirking. “Check this geek out.”

One of the bullies shoved past him, knocking all the books from his arms. Papers scattered across the floor.

  Another swung a punch.

Kiox reacted on instinct, catching the fist midair.

“Do we have a problem here?” Kiox said calmly.

Before either could answer, a third bully rushed from behind, bat raised. Kiox saw the movement in his peripheral vision. He turned, snatched the bat effortlessly, and struck back—dropping the third instantly. The other two followed moments later.

Kiox looked down at them, unimpressed.

“Weirdos,” he muttered. “Anyway… where is my class?”

  ********************

  That Night

Sleep came, but it didn’t stay peaceful.

Kiox dreamed of a vast, empty space. Before him stood a being clad in black, white, and blue armor—its presence overwhelming.

“So what now?” the being said. “Everyone else is down… and you’re next.”

  It attacked.

  Kiox jolted awake.

His room was dark—but not empty.

“So you’ve finally awakened,” a voice said. “Now I mus—”

Kiox reacted instantly, throwing the pocket knife beside his bed. The blade struck the figure… and bounced off harmlessly.

“Perhaps waiting here wasn’t the best idea,” the figure said casually. “Allow me to introduce myself. I am Kayi, from the outer universe of the Kaioxens. I am here to take you for training.”

  “What training?” Kiox demanded.

“The test of strength,” Kayi replied. “For the upcoming war between the Kaioxens and the Merph—”

“Look,” Kiox cut in, “you’ve got the wrong guy. It’s midnight. I’m going back to sleep. Get out of my house.”

  Kayi stared at him silently.

Then Kiox’s bed lifted off the floor.

  “OKAY—WHAT IS HAPPENING—STOP IT!”

“So,” Kayi asked calmly, “will you listen now?”

  “YES! JUST PUT ME DOWN!”

The bed lowered. Before Kiox could react, Kayi grabbed him—

  And the room vanished.

  ********************

  The Temple

They stood inside a massive stone temple, ancient and quiet.

“Whoa,” Kiox said. “How did you do that? And… where are we?”

“This is the Temple of the Kaioxens,” Kayi explained. “Only beings with true hearts may enter. If you lacked courage, you would be in pain right now.”

“I feel fine,” Kiox said. “But… what are you?”

“I am Kayi. Once the hero of the Kaioxens.”

  A pause.

  “Now, I am nobody.”

“Okay,” Kiox said. “But what does this have to do with me?”

“It’s not about you,” Kayi replied. “It’s about everyone else. There is an upcoming war. We need you.”

Kiox shook his head. “I appreciate the offer, but I’m not doing the hero thing. Eventually we all die. Take me home.”

Kayi studied him for a moment. “Very well.”

In an instant, Kiox was back in his room.

As Kayi turned to leave, he extended a finger. A small, glowing sphere drifted toward Kiox unnoticed.

  ********************

  The Next Day

On his way to school, a loud crash echoed down the street.

  A car accident.

Kiox rushed over. A man was trapped beneath the vehicle. Fuel leaked onto the pavement.

Kiox tried the window—it wouldn’t budge.

  He punched it.

  The glass shattered instantly.

How did I do that… so effortlessly?

Without thinking, he tore the door open and pulled the man free just in time.

Afterward, as he continued walking, an uneasy feeling crept over him.

  His instincts screamed.

  Alleyway.

  He turned into it.

  Kayi stood there.

  “Hello, Kiox. Been a while.”

“It’s been a day,” Kiox said. “What are you doing here?”

“You tell me,” Kayi replied. “How did you know I was here?”

Kiox paused. “Were you the one who did this?”

  Kayi laughed. “Did what?”

“So,” Kayi continued, “now that you’ve realized… do you want the training?”

“No,” Kiox said, walking past him. “Leave me alone.”

  “Very well,” Kayi said.

  ********************

  Later That Night

Kiox sighed as he walked home. “It’s been a long day…”

  Something felt wrong.

  WHOOSH.

Two figures slammed into him at incredible speed.

“Well, well,” one of them said. “Look what we have here.”

  “Move,” the other added.

“Watch where you’re going,” Kiox snapped.

  “Or what?”

  The being attacked.

  It didn’t hurt.

Kiox stood there, stunned. He had been hit at impossible speed—and felt nothing.

  He struck back.

One flew through the air. The other attacked, but Kiox dodged instantly and countered.

  The being evaporated.

“What the hell just happened…?” Kiox whispered.

  ********************

  That Night

Back in his room, Kiox spoke into the darkness.

  “I know you’re there, Kayi.”

“Oh my,” Kayi said. “Looks like your senses are working.”

“I’ve had a weird day,” Kiox said. “Please just leave me al—”

“I know,” Kayi interrupted. “You had your first battle.”

  “How did you—?”

“You’re lucky,” Kayi continued. “Those were BL1s—Beginner Level One. Easy targets. The next ones won’t be.”

  He stepped closer.

“So I ask you again. Do you want to train?”

  Kiox sighed.

  “…Fine. When do we start?”

  Kayi smiled.

  “Right now, Kiox.”

  ********************

  Week 1

  Kiox’s House — Morning

Kiox lies on his bed, staring at the ceiling.

  Kiox:

Man… when does training even start? There’s nothing to do. This is so boring.

  Kayi isn’t answering either.

Should I just go to him myself?

Kiox wanders around the house, thinking. Eventually, he stops.

  Kiox:

Alright. Guess I’ll go to him myself.

How do I do this again…?

  Nothing happens.

  Kiox:

  Huh. Let me jus—

  CRAAAASH!

  Kiox:

  WHAT WAS THAT?!

  ********************

  Backyard — Moments Later

  Kiox rushes outside.

Kayi is embedded in the ground, having crash-landed in the backyard.

  Kiox:

  …Kayi?

  Kayi:

Oh, hello Kiox. Did I wake you from your beauty rest? Hahaha.

  Kiox:

Before you say anything—work on your landing skills.

  Now fix this. Please.

  Kayi:

  Of course.

Kayi raises a finger. The damaged ground rewinds, restoring itself.

  Kiox:

  Wait—how did you do that?

  Kayi:

I returned the object to a previous state.

  Kiox:

  So… rewinding?

  Kayi:

Something like that. You told me to fix it. I fixed it.

  No more questions.

  Kiox:

  …Fine. Can we train now?

  Kayi:

  Sure. Get close.

  ********************

  Palace of the Kaioxens

  They teleport.

  Kiox:

Okay, so when do we tra—

Kayi suddenly punches Kiox, launching him across the palace.

  Kiox:

  AAAAHH—

  WHAT THE HELL, KAYI?!

  Kayi:

Did you ever stop to think… who I really am?

  Kiox freezes. Something feels wrong.

  Kayi always appeared calmly.

  He never crashed.

  Kiox:

  Then… who are you?

  Xai:

  Hehehe… I’m Xai. I heard you’re the upcom—

Kiox punches Xai. The hit barely affects him.

  Kiox:

You talk too much. Get to the point.

  Xai:

If that’s what you want… granted.

Xai rushes forward at extreme speed.

  Kiox blocks, deflects, counters.

  Kiox:

  This it?

If you can copy appearances, shouldn’t you copy power too?

  Xai:

  Uh—well—

  Kiox:

  Exactly.

Kiox attacks again, but his breathing grows heavier.

  Xai:

  You’re annoying.

  If I can’t use your trainer’s weak powers… I’ll use mine.

Xai shifts into his true form and casts a spell.

  Kiox:

Ugh—what is this? Why do I feel—

A barrier forms around Kiox, slowly shrinking.

  Xai:

Too bad. No one’s stopping me.

  Kayi (off-screen):

HEY! Keep it down. I’m trying to sleep.

  Kiox:

  Kayi?!

  Kayi:

Oh. Hello, Kiox. Ready for training?

  Kiox:

  Does this count as training?!

  Kayi:

  Not really.

  I had to help.

Kayi extends his arm. Xai freezes.

  The barrier shatters.

  Kiox:

  Thanks… so what about him?

  Kayi:

  I’ll handle it.

  Kayi:

  Vasarge.

Xai slowly fades out of existence.

  Kiox:

  …What did you just do?

  Kayi:

  I erased him.

  Kiox:

  WHAT?!

  Kayi:

There’s a lot about me you don’t need to know.

  Now—are we training or not?

  Kiox:

  …Sure. Why not.

  ********************

  The Next Day

  School — Classroom

  Background chatter.

  Kiox:

  What a boring day…

I really want to skip class.

  Kiox:

Teacher, may I go to the restroom?

  Teacher:

  Go ahead.

  School Bathroom

  Kiox:

  Finally. Time to—

  Kayi:

  Hello, Kiox!

  Kiox:

  WOAH—KAYI?!

  You can’t be here!

  Kayi:

  Come inside.

  Kiox:

  …Okay.

  Kiox:

  Someone could see you!

  Kayi:

  Already handled.

  Kayi opens a stall.

  Students are unconscious.

  Kiox:

  WHAT DID YOU DO?!

  Kayi:

  They’re asleep. They won’t remember.

  Kiox:

You couldn’t wait until it was empty?!

  Kayi:

  …Good point.

  Kayi:

  Anyway—Class B+ monster incoming.

  Leader of Xai’s clan.

  Kiox:

  And?

  Kayi:

  You’re fighting him.

  Kiox:

  Nope. I’m out.

Kiox tries to leave. The door won’t open.

  Kayi (smirking):

  Really?

  Kiox:

Fine. If I beat him, then what?

  Kayi:

  I’ll leave you alone.

  Kiox:

  Deal.

  ********************

  Battlefield — Later

  Kiox:

  So… when’s he arriving?

  Kayi:

  No idea.

Throw a boulder while you wait.

  Kiox:

  I can’t lift that.

  Kayi:

  Can’t you?

Kiox accidentally launches it into the air.

  Kiox:

  …

  Kayi:

  You were saying?

  Kiox:

  Forget it.

  Kiox:

  Something feels off.

  Kayi (muffled):

  Yeah, same.

  Kiox:

  Stop eating my donuts.

  Kayi:

  Can’t promise that.

  Kiox stiffens.

  Kiox:

  —!!

A figure crashes down. Kiox dodges.

  Bleeg:

  Hello, Kiox.

  Kiox:

  Do I know you?

  Bleeg:

  No. But I know you.

  Bleeg:

  I am Bleeg, leader—

  Kiox:

  That’s a weird name.

  Bleeg:

  …

  Bleeg attacks.

Kiox dodges, then gets hit from behind.

  Kiox:

  Okay—bring it on.
