The journey to Asterra was far from peaceful.
Scattered along dirt trails and shaded forest paths were roaming beasts—territorial, relentless, and testing the group's survival instincts with every encounter. These weren't massive threats, but they weren't pushovers either. Creatures like Brambelions, spined feline predators with leaf-like fur and clawed tails, and the Rottusk Boars, fast and aggressive, pushed everyone to their limits.
Josh relished it.
Josh: "Come on! Let's see what you've got!"
He roared as his Hornbeast barreled into a Brambelion, hooves thundering, tusks locking it's horns. Covered in sweat and dirt, the two of them fought like they'd been paired for years.
Kristie and Cedy supported from mid-range. While Cedy pelted rocks with impressive accuracy, Kristie used a sling she had quickly mastered, targeting joints or weak spots.
Kristie: "That one's flanking left—Cedy, you got it?"
Cedy: "Already on it."
A well-aimed strike clipped a Rottusk's eye, sending it screeching and stumbling back into the treeline.
Rica observed, noting creature behavior and movement patterns. Her voice was low but steady, almost like she was studying for an exam.
Rica: "Possible alpha-class... minimal pack behavior... low Essentia resonance... interesting."
Jonax mostly kept guard over the supplies but stepped in when needed—fast, efficient, and not wasting a single move.
Ren and Iver worked the frontline.
Ren struck with practiced timing, moving in sync with Vultherin—sharp, efficient, unshaken.
Iver, more reserved but no less deadly, filled in the gaps: blocking flanks with Drakehound, calling out terrain advantages, and executing clean takedowns when Ren's bond hesitated.
Lily and Elly, were incharge of protecting Seri... they didn't fight. Not yet. But they watched—closely. Their eyes tracked every move. There was fear still, but also something new. Focus. A spark.
By the time the final creature fled into the brush, everyone was panting. The group was scraped, bruised—but intact.
Josh: "Man, if this is the warm-up... can't wait for the real challenge."
Marian: "Speak for yourself, musclehead. I've got leaves in places I didn't know I had."

Rej: "We should name that boar. 'Trauma.' Because I'm never sleeping peacefully again."
Kristie: "You're all weak. I only almost died twice."
They laughed—tired but alive. Each fight brought them closer. More than just survival—it was shaping them.
...
The forest finally broke into plains and paved stone roads. And there, on the horizon—the towering gates of Asterra.
Massive. Alive.
Crimson-roofed towers rose behind fortified walls. Merchant stalls buzzed near the outer courtyards. Strange flying constructs patrolled the skies, their glowing eyes scanning below. Metallic veins ran through the stonework—pulsing faintly with energy.
Everyone went still.
Kristie: "No way..."
Cedy: "Okay, yeah. This wins. This beats modern malls. By a lot."
Lily clung to Elly's sleeve, eyes wide.
Lily: "This is like a game... but it's real."
Josh just gave a low whistle, eyes glued to the townscape.
Even Seri, the girl they rescued, looked overwhelmed.
Seri: "Vaelcrest wasn't even half this big..."
Rej, walking ahead with Marian, was practically vibrating.
Rej: "They have to have a guild system. Monster archive. Maybe even a—"
Marian: "Move faster, Rej. I smell food stalls and if I see meat skewers, I'm not waiting."
Rica paused a moment, staring up at the arching gates. She took a deep breath, stepped forward, and raised her voice:
Rica: "Alright! We'll split into teams. We need intel—culture, geography, politics, local threats, and especially anything related to Bonds or Essentia. Regroup at sundown in the plaza near that statue."
Jonax: "Statue? You mean the giant sword-holding guy glowing like he's judging me?"
Rica: "Yes. That one."
Ren turned to Rica, a slight smirk tugging at his lips.
Ren: "Now that's the Rica I remember."
Rica didn't smile, but her ears tinted pink.
Rica: "Spare me the compliments, you just wanted to avoid responsibility, now go."
She started assigning teams with sharp efficiency.
Rica took a step forward, surveying the city beyond the gates—its sheer size, its pulse, its weight. Then, with the kind of authority that silenced even Josh, she turned to the group.
Rica: "We need to move fast and smart. Asterra's massive—we won't cover even a tenth of it without splitting up. So here's the plan."
She pointed toward the towering spire with etched runes and a faint glowing symbol near its peak.
Rica: "I'll take Marian and Rej. That building's likely a library or some sort of record hall. If we can get in, we'll dig into everything—laws, Bonds, this world's history, the rules that govern Essentia."
Rej: "Finally. Actual answers. Bet they've got ancient monster taxonomy scrolls in there."
Marian: "And I'll read none of them. I'll just be there to make sure she doesn't start chewing on the books."
Rica: "I expect useful data by sundown."
She turned to Kristie, Cedy, and Jonax.
Rica: "You three—head to the market district. Figure out how their economy works. What's valuable here, how currency functions, bartering, trade rates—anything that'll keep us from starving or getting scammed."
Kristie: "Shopping and survival? My two favorite things."
Cedy: "Let's just hope no one tries to flirt their way into selling us overpriced apples."
Jonax: "If they do, I'll flirt back and get us a discount."
Kristie: "That's the spirit."
Rica: "Lily, Elly—you're on shelter duty. Find an inn or a safe resting point. Somewhere central, secure, and not crawling with drunk mercenaries. Talk to the locals, ask questions, compare prices."
Lily: "Got it! Come on, Elly—we're gonna judge every pillow and plate of stew we find."
Elly: "...Okay. Let's go Seri try not to get lost."
Seri followed, holding Elly and Lily's hands.
Finally, Rica turned to Ren, Iver, and Josh.
Rica: "As for you three—head to the combat quarter. If there's a monster guild, that's where it'll be. We need a source of income and structured battle experience. If they let you register, do it. As a team."
Josh's eyes lit up instantly.
Josh: "Yes. Finally. This is what I'm here for."
Iver: "If it's anything like guilds in stories, expect paperwork, terms, and probably someone testing our skills before they trust us."
Ren just gave a small nod. His eyes were already scanning the alleys for guild signs, weaponsmith banners, or anything that pulsed with combat energy.
Rica: "Regroup at sundown. That plaza near the sword statue. Share everything you learn."
Kristie: "If I die, I want my last words to be 'I told you it was overpriced.'"
Josh: "If I die, I better be holding a sword and yelling something cool."
Rej: "If you die, I'm stealing your boots."
Marian: "Move out before someone actually dies."
Cedy: "What if someone gets arrested?"
Kristie: "I'll only accept handsome guards to arrest me."
Josh: "I'll fight the guards if I have to."
Rica: "No one's getting arrested."
Elly, gently: "Let's try not to cause a scene, okay?"
Ren met Iver's gaze. No words needed.
With that, the party dispersed into the living veins of Asterra—each group heading into a different mystery, a different path.
Asterra had opened its gates. Now it was time to see what lay behind them.
