Chapter 7 What Do I Do?

Eyes sunk in a little as Jack waited in the clinic.

He had not slept since he woke up at night.

He was chasing sleep, but could not find it.

Now he was in the clinic waiting for Yeuh to arrive.

He had requested a full body check before the move to Arrakis, but that was just an excuse to get in the room with Yeuh.

The door softly opened as Jack was lost in his thoughts and Yeuh stepped in.

"How are you feeling Paul?" Yeuh asked, holding a clipboard.

"I am doing well, needed to get checked up before the move," Jack replied causing Yeuh to nod.

"Please lie on the bed," Yueh said as he pointed towards the bed. Jack nodded, he got up and lay on the medical bed while Yeuh walked beside him.

"Has the waist injury healed?" Yeuh asked looking at Jack.

"Yeah, it has," Jack nodded as he lifted his shirt a little showing the waist, which had for the most part healed up. Yeuh nodded and took out the scanner tool from a drawer nearby and began to scan the waist area to confirm if everything was okay.

The scanner humed a little as it swept the area around the waist for a few moments.

Jack was silent as he watched Yueh doing his work.

"Doctor… you trained at the Suk School, correct?" Jack asked.

"Yes, why do you ask?" Yeuh asked, glancing at Jack.

“Their conditioning is absolute, I’ve heard.”

Yeuh glanced at Jack and nodded, “It is,” Yueh replied.

Jack’s smile thinned. “I don’t believe anything is absolute.”

Yeuh's hand froze for a moment.

The quiet hum of the scanner was the only thing filling the silence.

"I would have to refuse," Yeuh muttered, his eyes focused on the scanner seemingly trying to avoid looking at Jack.

"Why do you refuse?" Jack asked.

"Conditioning can force a certain type of loyalty," Yeuh responded.

"Do you truly believe their methods are infallible?" Jack asked staring at Yeuh.

Yeuh felt like Jack's eyes seemed to be bearing a hole in the side of his head.

"Yes, I do" Yeuh replied with a slight frown.

If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

"Under certain circumstances, I believe people can overcome the conditioning," Jack said.

Yeuh resumed scanning, his face not betraying a hint of emotion.

"I am just curious, if someone held what you loved most… and told you to follow their instructions… would the conditioning still be effective?" Jack casually said.

Yeuh's grip over the scanner tightened.

"It will," Yueh said and finished the rest of the checkup and stepped back.

"Alright, the check up is all done, you are healthy," Dr. Yueh said.

"Thank you doctor." Jack smiled as he stood up and left the room.

Yueh watched Jack walk away and also exited the room.

Calmly, he began walking towards his room.

A few minutes later he walked into his room, and he shut the door behind him.

  Leaning against the door.

His heart was the only thing he could hear at this moment.

He inhaled yet forgot to exhale.

Clutching his chest, he slowly slid down to the ground, leaning on the door behind him.

Reaching into his pocket, Dr. Yeuh pulled out his wallet, opening it, he removed a photo.

It contained Yeuh alongside a woman, happily smiling together.

He stared at the picture, barely able to catch his breath.

Staring at the image, supplemented with deep breathing, his heart began to calm a little.

Staring at the roof, his pumping heart began calming down,

'Does he know...' The thought flashed in his mind for a moment.

'No, if Paul knew… then Thufir must know as well...'

He gritted his teeth, supporting himself up.

He began walking towards the drawer near his bedside.

Sliding it open, he lifted the secret compartment, revealing a communicator.

His head throbbed as he stared at the communicator.

'They must know,' his jaw clenched.

His hand reached closer to the communicator before stopping.

'If I warn them… I become expendable' he felt his breath go stagnant as he stared at the picture he held in his other hand.

"Wanna... What do I do" Yeuh muttered, bringing the image closer to his head.

'Please tell me, what do I do...'

A few drops of tears fell on the floor as his eyes never left the picture.

  ....

Jack walked to his room with a communicator in his hands. On the other end was Duncan.

"These guys are really adamant on the 'Chosen One' they keep trying to bring it up every time they see me," Duncan said.

"Yeah, avoid mentioning that, we do not want to give their belief any more power," Jack nodded and said.

"A little while ago, Duke Leto contacted me and he wasn't too happy about the fact that I told them about the no tax on water." Duncan nervously chuckled.

“Be careful what promises you make in Father’s name," Jack said noncommittally.

"It shouldn't be an issue as Duke Leto will have a conference call within the hour with the Representative of the Northern Sietches," Duncan said.

Jack was quiet for a moment thinking of a few things.

"How is the.." Jack paused, his eyes spotted Thufir not too far away.

A smile blossomed on his face.

  Jack glanced at Duncan.

"Duncan, I am gonna have to contact you in a bit," Jack said as he shut the communicator.

  Catching up with Thufir.

"Hey Thufir, how are the preparations going?" Jack asked as he reached near Thurfir who turned around and saw Jack.

"Young Paul, our job is to ensure the preparations are going well," Thufir said with a calm nod of his head.

"Where are you headed off to?" Jack asked, reaching beside Thufir.

"I am headed to Duke Leto's office," Thufir replied.

  'Nice!'

"Oh yeah, I heard from Duncan, is it about the conference call with the Northern Sietches?" Jack asked.

  "Indeed it is," Thufir nodded.

  "Can I join?"

"Certainly you can, young Paul," Thufir said as he began walking towards Duke Leto's room.

"I have been studying deeply into Arrakis and the Fremen, they are so interesting," Jack said casually.

"Indeed, they are an interesting species. What do you find interesting about them young Paul?" Thufir asked.

"They have been able to survive the desert's terribly harsh conditions, innovating such fascinating technology to preserve and create water on top of that, even under the tyranny of the Harkonens, they did not lose," Jack said casually as he walked.

Thufir however paused for a moment, his eyes flickering with white for a few moments before he continued walking.

"Very good assessment, young Paul. Interesting, I had missed something very important," Thufir muttered as his pace sped up.

Jack smiled slightly as he kept up with Thufir.
