Chapter 7 - Threshold Twenty

  The Hunter moved first.

  It always did.

The mechanical giant stepped forward with crushing weight, its crimson lens glowing like a burning star in the dim forest.

Metal limbs unfolded behind its back, extending into long blade-like appendages that hummed with stored energy.

  Kael felt the danger immediately.

  This thing had adapted.

The previous exchange wasn’t enough to destroy it—but it had forced the Hunter to reassess him as a threat.

Which meant the next attack would be far more serious.

Kael tightened his grip around the lotus lamp.

Golden light flickered between the petals.

The warmth spreading through his arm felt stronger now.

  Alive.

  Almost eager.

  A familiar panel appeared.

  [SYSTEM INTERFACE]

  Strength: 13

  Agility: 14

  Endurance: 12

  Deviation Index: 18%

  Status: Escalating

  Two more percent.

Kael didn’t know exactly what happened at twenty.

But every instinct told him it was important.

  The Hunter’s lens flashed.

  Then it vanished.

  Kael’s eyes widened.

  Too fast.

A blur of black metal appeared beside him.

One of the Hunter’s bladed limbs slashed downward.

  Kael triggered Ember Step instantly.

Golden sparks burst beneath his feet.

His body flashed sideways just as the blade carved through the ground where he had stood.

  Stone exploded.

The impact crater stretched nearly two meters deep.

  Kael barely kept his balance.

  “That thing’s getting faster.”

  The Hunter rotated smoothly.

  Its mechanical limbs spread wider.

Then all four blades struck at once.

  Kael activated Ember Step again.

Golden flame streaked through the clearing as he dashed between the attacks.

  Stolen novel; please report.

  But even that wasn’t enough.

  One blade clipped his shoulder.

  Pain exploded across his arm.

  Kael stumbled back.

Blood seeped through his torn sleeve.

  The Hunter advanced.

  Slow.

  Relentless.

A System panel flickered across its metallic body.

  Hunter Unit HX-01

  Combat Mode: Adaptive

  Target Elimination Probability: 83%

Kael wiped blood from his arm.

  “Eighty-three percent?”

  He forced a crooked smile.

  “Let’s ruin that calculation.”

  The lotus lamp pulsed.

Golden fire swirled inside the petals.

The warmth surged through Kael’s chest again.

  Another panel appeared.

  [LOTUS LAMP – INTERNAL RESONANCE]

  Synchronization: 11%

Flame Response: Host Under Lethal Threat

  Power Output: Increasing

  The Hunter fired again.

A beam of white energy erupted from its palm.

Kael rolled behind a fallen tree as the blast tore through the forest.

  Wood disintegrated instantly.

The shockwave threw Kael across the clearing.

He slammed into a rock and barely managed to stand again.

  This was bad.

  Very bad.

  The Hunter wasn’t just strong.

  It was precise.

  Perfectly optimized for combat.

  Kael exhaled slowly.

“If you want a real fight…”

  He raised the lotus lamp.

Golden fire ignited between the petals.

  “…then let’s finish it.”

  The Hunter charged.

Its blades whirled like spinning guillotines.

  Kael triggered Ember Step.

Golden flame burst beneath his feet.

He shot forward—not away from the Hunter this time.

  Toward it.

  The machine reacted instantly.

  Blades swung.

Kael ducked beneath the first strike.

Another blade slashed toward his neck.

  He twisted aside.

The third blade pierced the ground beside him.

  Kael saw the opening.

He thrust the lotus lamp forward.

  “Ember Burst!”

  Golden fire exploded outward.

The blast struck the Hunter’s chest at point-blank range.

  Light filled the clearing.

  The machine staggered.

  Its armor cracked.

  Silver runes flickered wildly.

System warnings erupted across its body.

  ERROR

  ENERGY INTERFERENCE DETECTED

  Kael pushed forward.

Golden flame continued pouring from the lotus lamp.

  The fire wasn’t normal.

  It didn’t just burn.

  It suppressed.

  The Hunter’s energy field collapsed.

  Its blades slowed.

Kael felt the moment the balance shifted.

  The lotus flame surged again.

  Another panel appeared.

  [LOTUS LAMP – INTERNAL RESONANCE]

  Synchronization: 12%

  Flame Evolution: Active

  The Hunter tried to retreat.

  But Kael didn’t let it.

He drove the lamp forward one final time.

Golden fire erupted across the machine’s chest.

  The armor shattered.

Light burst from within the Hunter’s core.

  Then—

  The machine collapsed.

  Its crimson lens flickered once.

  Twice.

  Then went dark.

  Silence returned to the forest.

  Kael stood there breathing heavily.

  The lotus lamp dimmed slowly.

  His vision flickered.

  Then the System panel appeared.

  Enemy Eliminated

  Strength Increased

  Agility Increased

  Endurance Increased

  Deviation Index Rising

  The numbers began to change.

  [SYSTEM INTERFACE]

  Strength: 13 → 15

  Agility: 14 → 16

  Endurance: 12 → 14

  Deviation Index: 18% → 20%

The moment the number reached twenty—

  The world changed.

The sky above the valley split with a deep, echoing tremor.

  Kael looked up.

  The clouds were tearing apart.

Golden light poured through the opening like a wound in the sky.

  High above—

  Something enormous stirred.

The lotus lamp flared brighter than ever before.

  A new panel appeared.

  [LOTUS LAMP – INTERNAL RESONANCE]

  Synchronization: 15%

  Flame State: Awakening

  At the same time—

  Inside the Celestial Registry—

Every system alarm activated at once.

  Subject: Kael Ashbound

  Deviation Index: 20%

  Classification Updated

The Observer stared at the data stream.

  For the first time—

The system failed to calculate a stable outcome.

  A new label appeared.

  SYSTEM STATUS

  Anomaly Confirmed

Back in the forest, Kael lowered the lotus lamp slowly.

  The golden light faded.

  But something had changed.

  He could feel it now.

The flame inside him burned stronger.

  More stable.

  More alive.

The path ahead stretched deeper into the wild valley.

Toward ruins older than the System itself.

Toward power the heavens no longer fully controlled.

  Kael exhaled slowly.

  Then he started walking.

  High above the clouds—

  The Observer spoke quietly.

  Not with curiosity this time.

  But with concern.

  “Deviation has reached twenty percent.”

A second voice answered from the depths of the Registry.

  Cold.

  Ancient.

  “Prepare containment.”

And for the first time since the System’s creation—

The heavens began planning a war.
