Epi.14-Note: Solo Camping as a Cultural Phenomenon — The State of Solo Camping in Japan

Some time ago, solo camping became popular in Japan.

It is said that this was greatly influenced by the fact that the anime Laid-Back Camp had already brought it attention, and then the spread of COVID-19 made people more conscious of social distancing.

Many Japanese people tend to be particular about their gear, and a cycle emerged in which they would buy new gear and try it out while camping, with the enthusiasm growing together with the manufacturers.

However, as the popularity overheated, campsites became so crowded that reservations were difficult to obtain, and popular gear repeatedly sold out or was resold at high prices.

Because of these circumstances, the boom gradually settled down.

Today, it seems that the environment has returned to one where people can enjoy camping more calmly.

Now then, in Japan it is not unusual for women to go solo camping, and I have heard that this sometimes surprises people overseas.

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

This is partly a matter of public safety, but it is also because there are relatively few dangerous wild animals.

That said, there have been cases where women were harassed by men with ulterior motives, so it is not that it is safe everywhere; generally, people do it at campsites where there are other people around.

In the story, Yuka said, “When you think of camping, it’s curry rice,” but that image is a little outdated.

Even today, curry remains a standard dish for large group camps such as school camping trips, but individuals or small groups tend to be more particular about their cooking.

Dishes such as waterless curry and takikomi gohan (Japanese seasoned rice cooked with ingredients), along with ajillo and hot sandwiches, seem to be popular.

I don't like bugs, so I don’t go camping, but there is something about camp cooking that appeals to me.

Although quite a lot of time has passed since I first thought about trying it at home, writing this may be some kind of opportunity.

I think it’s about time I finally get myself moving.

Well then, until the next Note.
