Chapter 4.

  Chapter 4.

  One week later.

“Phew. Look at how well you’re jumping. Looks like you’re completely healed already.”

Soochan watched Turf bounding and leaping across the mountain ridge.

With his terrifying recovery speed, Turf had fully recovered and was already running around energetically from early morning.

Stepping on rocks, darting between trees like the wind—he looked exactly like a fish back in water.

“Seeing you run around like this, those bandages must have been really frustrating, huh.”

Soochan smiled warmly as he watched Turf racing across the mountain.

Just a few days ago the fox had been limping badly, but now seeing him healthy and bounding freely across the hills put Soochan’s mind at ease.

Soon, Turf—who had been chasing dragonflies in circles around a large boulder—called out to him.

  “Kyao. Kyao.”

  “What’s up?”

  “Kyau. Kyauuu.”

“Want to rest? Or want me to catch the dragonfly for you?”

  “Kyau!”

Feeling stifled, Turf suddenly dashed right up to Soochan. He began rubbing his head against Soochan’s hands and legs. The behavior was exactly like a dog begging to play.

“This guy… when he acts like this, he really doesn’t seem like a mystical creature—just a regular pup.”

Soochan laughed and scratched behind Turf’s ears.

Just like he used to do with Maru, he ran his hand along the neck and combed through the fur. Turf immediately rolled onto his back in delight, showing his belly.

  “Feels good, huh?”

  “Kyauuu!”

Under Soochan’s skilled hands, Turf wriggled happily on the ground, acting all coy.

For Turf—who had never had close contact with humans—Soochan’s precise, firm scratches in all the right itchy spots felt like the perfect, ideal back-scratcher that could reach everywhere.

“Look at you loving it so much. Yeah… this is exactly why people keep pets.”

  Soochan was delighted.

From his words, it was clear he thought of the mystical Sylvester Fox as nothing more than a clever companion animal.

If he truly understood the true nature and value of a Sylvester Fox, he never would have said something like that—but since he didn’t know, he simply regarded Turf as an exceptionally smart pet.

  “Kyao?”

While rubbing himself happily, Turf suddenly sniffed the air as a breeze blew past, then sprang to his feet.

The fur and tails of the standing Turf began to bristle.

Alert mode—the same posture he had taken in the basement when monsters appeared.

“Hm? What’s wrong all of a sudden? Something up?”

  “Kyao.”

“Wait—hold on! You’re gonna rip my sleeve like that.”

In response to Soochan’s question, Turf abruptly bit his sleeve and started tugging.

  As if saying, Follow me!

Sensing something serious from the behavior, Soochan instinctively realized the situation wasn’t normal.

  “Something’s going on, isn’t it.”

  “Kyao.”

  “Alright. Let’s go.”

At Soochan’s reply, Turf released the sleeve and started running toward the house.

Whenever the distance grew too wide for Soochan to keep up, Turf would wait, then dash forward again.

Following Turf, Soochan checked the direction.

“Looks like those monsters showed up again.”

After confirming the route, Soochan was certain.

There could be no other reason for the fox’s excited behavior and bristling fur.

“I thought we were safe since nothing happened for a while!”

  Chasing after Turf, Soochan frowned.

During the week Turf was recovering, no monsters had emerged from the basement.

Soochan had believed that blocking the black hole-like portal with a refrigerator and wardrobe had sealed it completely.

He thought that if the entrance was blocked, monsters couldn’t come through.

But that was a naive and complacent assumption.

Simply piling furniture in front didn’t close the portal.

  “My house…”

From the hill overlooking the house, Soochan’s expression darkened.

Below, he could see a swarm of the same monsters he had hunted before gathered in large numbers.

  Urt goblins.

Goblins belonging to the Urt tribe.

Creatures with frog-like appearance and habits, and possessing a slight degree of intelligence.

Notable for their insatiable greed and extremely high reproduction rate, allowing them to rapidly form colonies and take over territories.

  “Keung! Keung! Kyak!”

  “Keung! Keueong!”

The goblins were shouting and swinging clubs.

They had smashed the windows of Soochan’s house and broken the front gate.

Thanks to their rampage, the entire area had turned into chaos.

Among the wreckage were Turf’s food sack and feeding bowl.

  “Grrrrrr!”

Urt goblins tore open the feed bag and were greedily devouring the kibble inside.

Seeing them, Turf bristled even more fiercely and ground his teeth.

He hadn’t even used a skill yet, but sparks were already flying from his body.

  [Turf is showing strong hostility.]

As lightning sparks crackled, a message appeared before Soochan’s eyes.

It was a change that appeared after taming—whenever Turf experienced intense emotional shifts. Usually it showed up when he was hungry, thirsty, or in pain.

“Wait. There are too many of them.”

Soochan tried to calm Turf down.

The number of Urt goblins that had appeared on the island was far greater than expected.

Even just the ones visible on the hillside below numbered at least ten.

If you included the ones scattered across the rest of the island, there could easily be more than double that.

  Not something to take lightly.

  “Still… it’s fortunate the gorilla-like one isn’t here.”

Only smaller ones were roaming around.

Soochan considered that a small mercy.

“Turf. Don’t rush in recklessly. Let’s prepare to fight first.”

Soochan spoke while trying to soothe him. But despite his words, Turf’s tails remained raised.

  “Grrrr! Kyau!”

  [Turf is showing confidence.]

Instead, Turf displayed strong confidence and looked ready to charge at any moment.

He was clearly expressing his will to fight.

“There are already ten visible ones. There could be even more inside the house.”

  “Kyauuu!”

  [Turf is showing strong confidence.]

  Turf’s confidence grew even stronger.

Only then did Soochan belatedly realize.

‘He’s not trembling. He’s not just excited out of anger?’

Even though his fur and tails were bristling, his body remained calm.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Normally when excited, the body tenses and shakes—but there was no sign of that here.

From this, Soochan judged that Turf was thinking rationally.

“…Ah! You mean you’re confident you can win.”

  “Kyau!”

“Alright. Let’s wipe out those damn things together.”

  “Kyauuu!”

At Soochan’s permission, Turf kicked off the ground.

In that instant, he shot forward like a cheetah across the plain, charging the nearest goblin.

  “Keung?”

  “Kyao!”

The moment Turf launched, he clamped his jaws around one goblin’s nape.

The goblin’s neck was torn more than halfway open; it collapsed, spraying blood.

  “So fast.”

Soochan was impressed by Turf’s speed. But it was still too early to simply admire.

  “Grrrr!”

With a sharp tak! sound, Turf stepped off the wall and leaped.

He soared over the heads of three goblins, landed on the shoulder of the front one, crushed it down with his full weight, then twisted its neck with his jaws.

  “Kerek!?”

  “Keung!”

The sound of bones snapping as the goblin’s neck broke drew the attention of its companions. But their eyes never reached Turf.

He had already dashed forward in a cloud of dust and bitten through another goblin’s throat in one fluid motion.

A perfect ambush, like a predator on the hunt!

Another one died without even having time to scream.

Turf, muzzle stained with blood, turned toward the last one and charged again.

  “Keueong!”

Moving like lightning, Turf subdued yet another in an instant.

Having taken down four goblins in rapid succession, Soochan couldn’t hide his astonishment.

‘Come to think of it… even in the basement, Turf never really struggled.’

Although he had used skills to clear them out, Turf hadn’t seemed particularly hard-pressed against the smaller goblins. He had wiped them out quickly and then held his own against the big one for a long time.

Proof that Turf was far from weak.

  ‘Besides, this isn’t a cramped basement. It’s a wide-open hillside. Plenty of space to use a quadruped’s greatest advantage—speed.’

  Soochan scanned the surroundings.

Unlike the narrow basement, this was a broad hillside.

Not quite a plain, but more than enough room for a four-legged beast to exploit its natural speed.

‘The small ones can’t beat Turf.’

Decision made, he looked at Turf—who was watching him.

Turf gazed back with steady eyes, waiting only for Soochan’s command.

Seeing the fox’s fearless, dignified posture, Soochan decided to trust him completely.

“Alright. Fight, Turf! Kill every goblin on this island!”

  “Kyau!”

  [Command issued.]

[Turf is carrying out the command.]

  Receiving the order, Turf turned.

Sniffing the air to track the enemy scent, he kicked off again and charged toward the next goblin.

Knocking one down after another, Turf surged forward relentlessly.

Watching Turf move freely across the terrain with superior speed, Soochan didn’t rush. Instead, he slowly walked toward the house yard.

In one corner of the yard—now littered with goblin corpses—he picked up a shovel.

  “Kerek! Kerek!”

  “Still breathing, huh.”

Soochan swung the shovel and finished off a goblin that was coughing up blood from its torn throat.

Confirming the neck—thinner than a wrist—had been severed, he peered through the broken window to check inside the house.

Though the wall obstructed a clear view, the small shadows moving beyond the window frame, the sound of breaking dishes, and rustling noises made it obvious there were quite a few goblins inside.

‘Going inside with just a shovel would be dangerous.’

Soochan looked around, searching for a better method.

  “That’ll do.”

Having found his solution, he moved.

Passing the goblin corpses, he walked to the generator. He pulled the cord to start it, then picked up the high-pressure washer next to it.

The pressure washer—connected to the water tank—had been bought by his parents for watering the backyard vegetable garden (potatoes, peppers, perilla, etc.).

Since the garden was on the hillside, carrying water up was inconvenient. So from long ago, the family had used a sprayer to water from afar.

  Vroom vroom vroom!

With a loud roar, the generator started.

Hearing the noisy engine, the goblins inside reacted immediately.

  “Keung! Keung!”

  “Keueong!”

They came pouring out after hearing the noise.

As the house-wrecking goblins emerged, Soochan plugged the pressure washer’s power cord into the generator’s extension line.

The washer powered on. He raised his head to check the enemies.

Goblins holding stones, wooden clubs, and various household items from his house—including his cherished tool box.

“These bastards dare break into someone else’s home!”

Furious at the unauthorized invasion, Soochan shouted loudly and pulled the trigger.

A powerful jet of water burst from the hose he was holding.

As soon as the water shot out, Soochan aimed it at the goblins coming into the yard.

  “Keung!”

Hit by the water, the goblins flinched and cried out in their signature grotesque voices.

He wasn’t just spraying randomly—he was deliberately targeting their eyes.

While the pressure washer could shoot far, it wasn’t strong enough to knock the goblins down or push them back. So aiming at sensitive spots like the eyes was the only way to make them hesitate.

  “Kerek!”

The flinching goblins raised their hands to block the water and advanced.

One washer alone couldn’t drive all the goblins back.

“But I can at least get them soaked.”

  “Keung!”

Taking advantage of Soochan turning the washer, one goblin charged at him.

Soochan dropped the hose, grabbed the shovel, and smashed it down on the head of the leading goblin.

  “Kek!”

One goblin collapsed after taking a direct hit to the skull. The rest immediately rushed him together.

Seeing them charge as a group rather than separately, a smile crept onto Soochan’s lips.

“You damn bastards! You’ll pay for messing up my house!”

Looking at the remaining nine, he extended his free hand and activated a skill.

  “Lightning Shock!”

Lightning flashed from his hand, releasing powerful electricity.

The discharged current struck the lead goblin, electrocuting it—and in the same instant, chained through the nine behind it in succession.

  “Kerrrrrk!”

  The electrocuted goblins screamed.

They collapsed, black smoke pouring from their mouths.

But not all of them fell.

  Three were still standing.

  “Keueong!”

“Quite a few just fainted instead of dying.”

Soochan confirmed that besides the standing ones, several others were still breathing on the ground.

The output of Lightning Shock wasn’t enough to kill all nine goblins outright.

  “Still, not bad.”

Shovel in hand, Soochan stared at the goblins.

If they were gorilla-sized, it would be different—but small ones like these weren’t particularly frightening.

They were smaller than him, and after being electrocuted, their movements were sluggish.

For someone who had been running and building stamina all over the island, they weren’t much of a threat.

  “I’ll go first.”

Soochan advanced toward the remaining goblins.

He had no special combat technique.

He simply swung the shovel as hard as he could, aiming the sharp edge at their heads and bodies.

It was a plain, unrefined swing—but the goblins couldn’t dodge.

Their bodies, still affected by the electricity, refused to move properly.

As a result, they were struck by the shovel—bones breaking, vital points torn open—meeting their deaths.

  “Not exactly enjoyable.”

Killing intruders, yes—but Soochan felt no pleasure.

He was somewhat accustomed to taking life—catching fish while fishing, killing rats without hesitation—but fish, rats, and goblins felt completely different. These were larger than fish or rats; it felt more like beating a wild land animal to death.

“Still… it has to be done. These aren’t humans—they’re monsters.”

He raised the shovel again. Thinking of them not as innocent lives but as harmful pests damaging nature, he forcibly steeled his wavering heart and finished off the ones still breathing.

A short while later, after cleaning up, a soul stone emerged from the last goblin’s body.

Popping out like popcorn, the soul stone glowed with a beautiful, firefly-like light even in daylight.

“It doesn’t get dirty at all.”

Soochan remarked as he picked it up.

Even though it had fallen into blood and water, the soul stone remained perfectly clean.

Clearly some mysterious power prevented contamination.

“Still, better to wash it once.”

Soochan gathered all the marble-like soul stones, rinsed them with water, put them in his mouth, and swallowed.

They felt hard and foreign going down, making it uncomfortable—but once inside the body, they dissolved completely, so there was no issue.

  [Level up. Magic Power +3]

  [Level up. Intelligence +3]

[Turf’s level has increased. Agility +3]

As they slowly digested, level-up notifications appeared.

Turf’s message appeared too. It seemed Turf had also leveled up by consuming the soul stones from the goblins he killed.

“No more left in the house… Looks like the ones I just dealt with were all of them.”

  Soochan surveyed the devastated house.

  His mother’s cherished plates—shattered.

The table his father had repaired—broken.

His and his younger sister’s rooms—covered in filthy goblin footprints.

  Maru’s food bowl—crushed.

Soochan let out a deep sigh and walked into the living room.

The first thing that caught his eye was the broken drawer and the old folder phone inside.

Seeing it, he hurried over and checked the phone’s condition.

  “It’s fine. Thank goodness.”

Relieved to see the intact phone, he felt reassured.

This phone was his only means of calling for rescue from the outside world—and the only way his one and only younger sister could contact him.

Though she had never called even once since leaving the island, he still believed that someday she would reach out again.

She was his only remaining blood relative in the world.

“I hope the rest is okay too… Huh?”

While earnestly checking the living room, Soochan’s expression froze.

He had spotted a picture frame lying in the corner.

Inside was a family photo—of him, his younger sister, their late parents, and Maru, who had passed away not long ago.

The only photo they had ever taken all together.

And now that precious photo lay on the floor, glass shattered, the edge of the picture itself torn.

Unable to contain the rising anger, Soochan gripped the shovel tighter.

  “Damn it!”

He headed down to the basement.

Pushing aside the broken door, he searched for goblins.

  Fortunately, there were none.

“So this was the real problem.”

The light bulb that turned on with the generator illuminated the basement wall.

At the far end, the black portal had grown even larger than before.

It had expanded beyond its original size.

“Half the wall before… now it reaches the edges.”

The refrigerator and wardrobe he had used as a barricade were now flanked on both sides by the expanded black portal.

Since the barricade itself remained intact, the goblins must have come through the widened portal.

  “Damn it.”

Soochan tapped the floor with the shovel and sighed.

Blocking the entrance had stopped the initial invasions—but if the portal itself grew larger, allowing goblins to pass through, the situation changed completely.

  The barricade became meaningless.

“It’s not just spreading sideways. It’s expanding upward too. Eventually monsters might start appearing right in the living room.”

He imagined it—not during the day, but at night—monsters suddenly emerging in his living room.

He pictured himself and Turf sleeping, only to be ambushed.

“If I leave it like this, not only the house but the entire island will become a monster den.”

Staring at the portal, Soochan’s face twisted in disgust.

The thought of this island—filled with family memories—turning into a lair for grotesque monsters was unbearable.

  “Damn monsters!”

  “Kyau.”

  Turf had returned.

Having followed Soochan’s scent down to the basement, Turf stood beside the furious man and nudged his hand with his head.

Feeling the gentle pokes, Soochan gradually calmed down and looked back at the black portal.

As he settled, Turf also stared at it.

  [Turf is showing strong enmity.]

“Turf. You feel the same way I do, don’t you?”

  “Kyau!”

  Turf nodded at Soochan’s words.

  Their thoughts aligned perfectly.

“Right. Even if we block the entrance, these bastards will keep coming. Unless we destroy the house itself and seal the entrance completely, this will never end.”

The only way Soochan could think of to truly block the entrance was one thing:

To demolish the home filled with family memories.

  But he couldn’t do that.

He could never destroy this house steeped in memories.

It was one of the biggest reasons he had chosen to stay on the island instead of leaving.

He could never give it up.

  Therefore…

  “There’s only one option left.”

  “Kyau!”

“Right. Let’s clean out this damn portal completely.”

Soochan gripped the shovel tightly as he spoke.

Since he couldn’t destroy the house, he would wipe out every monster beyond the portal instead.

It was no different from a life-risking act of madness.

But right now, there was no one present to point that out.

  “Kyau!”

  [Turf agrees.]

  No one to stop them.

“Alright. Let’s wipe them all out. Heh heh.”

Soochan gave a sinister chuckle while holding the shovel; Turf’s tail wagged furiously in excitement.

Turf, too, had a lot of grudges against the goblins.

He welcomed Soochan’s decision from the bottom of his heart, thinking Soochan was helping him get revenge.

  Their hearts beat as one.

  And at that exact moment—

  A new change began.

[The Banished Dungeon Lord Divine Beast’s Leader appoints you as Administrator.]

  [Will you accept?]

  [Yes / No]

A message appointing Soochan as the dungeon administrator.

Not understanding the situation, Soochan was momentarily flustered—but convinced the message wasn’t harmful, he pressed “Yes.”

[The Banished Divine Beast’s Leader appoints you as Dungeon Administrator.]

  [Quest issued.]

[Quest – Recapture the Divine Beast Dungeon]

[Objective: Together with the descendant of the Divine Beast, recapture the dungeon occupied by the lesser demon Urt Goblins. The dungeon is currently under Urt Goblin control. Starting from the upper floors, eliminate the Urt Goblins in order and destroy the breeding ground on the lowest basement level. Upon successfully recapturing the dungeon from the demon’s grasp, the banished deity will rise again and bestow rewards.]

[Rewards: Divine Beast’s Recognition, Divine Beast’s Fang, One Stroke of the Root]

  The quest appeared.

Soochan calmly read the details without surprise.

“In other words, if we destroy the breeding ground in the basement, no more of these monsters will appear?”

  “Kyao!”

Turf nodded vigorously at Soochan’s words.

For both of them, that was the most important part.

“Alright, Turf. Let’s wipe out every last one of these damn goblins!”

  “Kyauuu!”

  Soochan steeled his resolve.

Turf also agreed, burning with fighting spirit.

To protect the house. To avenge his friend.

Soochan and Turf joined forces—and thus began the full-scale dungeon recapture operation.
