The next morning the group gathered their provisions and belongings and began the last push to reach the inn and hopefully put this ordeal behind them in order to continue their broken lives in a new safer locale. The swampy land began to transition from bramble trees and spongy ground, to a sandy soil with pine trees and various underbrush that could tolerate the barren soil beneath. As they made their way through the forest, they had to hack their way through the brush with their scythes in order to proceed. After a few hours of trekking, they found a small clearing with a pond where they replenished their water supplies, bathed, and set out making camp for the night. Mari and one of the other adult females set up a campfire and cooked some rabbits they snared around the perimeter. The night was uneventful, with no further surprise attacks. It would take a lot of effort for an enemy to traverse the dense overgrowth to reach the clearing as the group did by chopping their way through the forest. After another day of travel, the group would reach the inn by nightfall and at last be relatively safe from the mysterious creatures that had decimated their homeland.
