chapter 1: shattered beginnings 2/9

As she left the house, checking to see if he was teaching my sister in the front yard, a hawk flew through the window and perched on the fence of my crib. I attempted to back up, but the towel wrapping around me was deemed a problem. The hawk jumped next to me, its beak came closer to my stomach, yet instead of eating me alive, it placed something on me. My mother came in, startling it away but never noticed it was there. I had looked down to see what it had done to me, and it was a black watch that I felt a strange connection to. My mother walked in and noticed it.

“Mom, did you get that for Ash?” Thira turned her head towards my mom

“No, I don't know where that came from. Mav, was it you?” She turned to my father, trying to find a reason for the sudden appearance of the watch.

“Don't look at me. I would never buy something dark and gloomy for our little ashen.” he hovered over me, raising the pitch of his voice.

“Well, what should we do with it? And mommy, when will Ashy talk?”She turned to my mom, pouting

“We might sell it, sweetie.” This brought me back into the conversation. If the watch had clues to my past life, I needed to keep it at all costs.

“I... I like watches." I soon regretted saying this, as the whole house went crazy, praising me. After it had settled down, they put the watch on a counter near my crib, waiting for me to grow enough to wear it.

“Come on, Ash. I believe in you!” my mother cheered, clapping her hands at my endeavor. Her words did not reach my ears, though, as I was fixed on trying to walk. As I lifted my foot, it felt like it was being weighed down. I placed it, lifting the other. I smiled and celebrated since it had been a month since I started trying.

I turned to my mother and started walking towards her, one heavy step after the other, falling into her embrace and cheering, “I did it, Mom!”

“I know you did, sweetie, I'm so proud of you!” She beamed a smile towards me

“Yeah, I wanna show them how awesome I am!” I had unknowingly gotten used to being a baby and seeing my family happy. My second life could wait till I come of age.

All of that aside, my body will start suffering if I don't gain a source of mana. This is one of the main downsides of having a mana body; if I don't get enough mana, my body will start to shut down, leading to my death. If I estimated correctly, I have until I turn ten to find a source of mana, meaning I have around eight and a half years left. Starting my training can extend the time by a few months; this sounds measly, but it can save my life if needed.
