E-Ink: We'll see color eReaders by the fourth quarter

E-mail Print PDF

Display vendor E-Ink says it will be supplying customers with color electrophoretic displays (EPD) for release in the fourth quarter -- perhaps in time for the important Christmas selling season -- and expects color devices to make up 10 percent of the eReader world in 2011.

Though there's been lots of vague talk about color eReaders by the end of the year from the likes of Fujitsu (and, in hushed tones, from Amazon), no one's come right out and promised product. To be honest, they're still not, though farther up in the food chain E-Ink is saying that they'll be shipping devices this year to resellers. The issue will be how quickly the supply chain can turn around.

E-Ink has been on a roll supplying displays. Currently the manufacturer is shipping two EPDs -- a capacitive touch display and an electromagnetic display -- and is seeing gross margins of 30 percent on its products. Given that margin, some are predicting that we could see lower eReader costs as well.
